Constitution change
to be discussed
at Senate meeting
By LEIGH ANN MANIS
Optimist Stall
Proposed changes in election procedures
will be among several revisions to the
Student Senate constitution to be discussed
Wednesday at the Senate meeting
Other proposed revisions include
resignation procedures and membership
qualifications said Chris Tharnngton.
chairman of the constitutional revision
committee and election chairman
Concerning elections the committee
proposes that donations should be included
in the $75 limit of campaign expenditures
he said Placement of campaign materials
must be cleared through the election
chairperson rather than through the
"proper authorities." as the constitution
now states
Also the committee decided that no
voter solicitation should be allowed in the
Bean or anywhere else on election day.
Tharnngton said Any violation of election
procedures would automatically
disqualify a person instead of making the
person "subject to disqualification."
Another proposal is for the electorate to
include part time students as well as all
other members of the Students'
Association. Tharnngton said.
Also the committee proposed to conduct
elections according to the number of votes
a person receives instead of the per-
centage Another proposed change is that on the
first election day. candidates for freshman
and sophomore senators would be
narrowed to the top 11 vote-getters.
Tharrington said The candidates would be
narrowed to seven on the second day and
to five on the third day
Candidates for junior and senior
senators would be narrowed to the top 10
vote-getters on the first day. six on the
second day and four on the third day. he
said
Candidates for executive officers and
class officers would be narrowed to the top
three vote-getters on the first day. two on
the second day and one on the third day.
said Tharrington
Another proposal is to have special
elections to fill Senate vacancies after
resignations he said. This rule would
apply to every senator and officer except
for the executive and class presidents. If a
president could not fulfill his duties the
vice president would assume his position.
