Students from Y-Teens In Abilene ptay babyopoly a board game developed to teach the consequences of
irresponsible sexual behavior.
The facllltatory will prompt the
players to answer questions that
deal with topics such as the con-
sequences of casual sex family
planning and parental responsi-
bilities. Babyopoly has proved success-
ful to it purposes. After only a
few years in its trial stage Baby-
opoly is now being mass pro-
duced by D. Davis Kenny of San
Antonio.
The game is used as a tool of
instruction In at least three coun-
tries 23 states and numerous
cities including Abilene.
"The game is an ingenious way to
reach teens and pretcens to teach
the consequences of unplanned
families and the benefits of
planned stable families" said
Mary Lewandowski coordinator of
the Community Foundation Teen
Pregnancy Prevention Initiative.
Babyopoly is designed for play-
ers as young as 12 years old.
"10s at the pre-teen age where
you actively discover your Identi-
ty" Lovltt said. "Thats when the
hormones are starting to wake up
and say 'What am l? Who am 1?
Where am 1 going?' But the pre-
teens arc still at the preventive
time."
Allison Miller youth program-
ming director for the Abilene
YWCA Y-Teens said one good
aspect of Babyopoly is that it
teaches the positive gains that
arise from responsible sexual
beliavior and not just the harsh
effects of Irresponsible behavior.
"The girls enjoy it and always
ask to play it again" Miller said.
Lovltt said his main goal Is to
give teenagers to choice to make
the right decision for life.
Lovitt said "It is our prayer
that when teens play the game
the situations stick in their head
so that when they're out on
Friday nights they will think
twice about what they are com-
mitting themselves to."
