Next time you stand in a shadow
consider this: you're standing in a
shadow.
Every shadow no matter how flat it
looks is three-dimensional. Thatis why
you can stand in it.
If that doesn't impress you how about
this one.
The moon doesn't really change
slzcL Nor docs it always get closer to
Earth right before it rises above the
horizon. But when we see it come up
over the horizon the moon looks
much larger than it does right above
us. Why?
t Consider that a rhetorical question
because nobody knows. As for me these
questions are just another reason 1 want
to go to Heaven when I die.

Twould like to share with you the joys of
JLDcmg a new tatner except lor one
thing: I'm not a dad yet You see my wife
Jen and I are expecting our first child in
June and while we arc excited as can be
we simply do not know what to think
Similarly I have been asked to con
tribute this column on what it is like to
speak at Lectureship except for one v
thing: My speech is not until Wednesday
afternoon. So when I was asked to write
this brief atricle I had to resign myself to
merely expressing my curiosity
It all reminds me of being a child and
the experience of moving into a big house.
Your new room is large like all the other
rooms 'of the giant building your parents
aire now calling "home." But at night the
room takes on a life of Its own. It grows
isolated from the rest of the house and it
is dark - very dark To remedy this prob-
lem morn buys a nlghtlight and for the
next few years that light makes itself
kn6wri' in the thick blackness that
demanded so much attention. Yet as time
goes by we simply grow out of It and it
begins to feel more and more like home.
This is a good analogy for me to keep
as I prepare to move into a new

For the first time .in my life I will be
speaking at an event that up to this
point 1 have merely participated in as a
spectator. (To be perfectly honest I'm
terrified. If only they made nightlights
for such occasions.)
1 have always looked forward to
Lectureship but now that 1 will meet it
from the other side I am anxious to find
out how my perspectives will change. If
you want the truth about what it b like
to speak at this event you'll have to ask
me at a later date. I am hoping that It will
be something like sleeping in a new

scary at first. But as time passes it wjll
