The business men of Winchester
observed the two main holidays of
the past weak by closing their places
of business and attending services at
the church, and the young folks werfe
also present. On^ New Year’s night,
at exactly twelve o'clock, the young
folks caused, the church bells to be
rung; the gin whistle blew for a half
hour, the fireworks were plentifully
discharged and a gladsome welcome,
generally speaking was extended to
the New Year. It was very accep-
table even to the older folks who
were thus rudely awakened from their
j slumbers, but they realized what it
meant to the youngsters and praised
them for their manner of celebrating.
Many riicb presents were given to
friends.

The ukulele girls gathered at the
home of S. C. Hart Saturday night,
January 1st, at 7:30 p. m., to create
a little thrill in behalf of the New
Year. All were dressed in attire
suited to horaebafk riding, and all
mounted horses with their “uke’s” to
begin their escapade all over town.
The crowd comprised, seven girls and
seven boys. The starting point
being the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.
G. Moore, the entire town was in-
cluded. The serenaders were wel-
comed by all and treated royally by
a number of homes.
