day afternoon, and his wife was suf-
fering from a serious knife wound in
her ha|ck. following an alleged at-

Accordnig to witnesses, the woman
was walking with a companion to-
ward the business .part of Cuero. and
as she passed under the railroad
tressel near-the ice plant. Mayfleidj
ran up to her and stabbed the woman (
in the hack. The woman, crying for!
help, ran toward a negro barber shop j
near by, and Mayfield dashed away in,
another direction.
