niversity vies for residential Library

NEWS EDITORS
The University of Dallas is
among seven Texas schools and
one Texas city bidding to be the
site of the future George W. Bush
Presidential Library Center.
"The library would have many
advantages being located at the
University of Dallas, and we will
be discussing those more as we
proceed with this project." Dr.
Frank Lazarus, UD president,
said.
UD has been working on the
proposal for 22 months.
Contenders Were asked to
spell out within their proposals
plans for raising the $200 million
needed to build the facility.
The proposals must also ad-
dress housing Bush's documents,
developing educational programs,
providing convenient tourist ac-
cess, and development to the sur-
rounding economic community
Following the review of the
proposals, Bush will have friends
recommend finalists, and then
make his final decision.
The library has been estimated
to attract close to 400,000 visitors
each year, Larry Groth, Waco City
Manager, said.
According to USA Today, with-
in the first six weeks of opening,
President Bill Clinton's library at-
tracted 100,000 visitors, and since
then, has caused $1 billion worth
of development to downtown
Little Rock.
The library will provide the
chosen site with national recog-
nition and the surrounding area
with a steady flow of tourists and
increased development.
Bush has told reporters that
his wife, Laura, will have a say in
where the library will be built.
Together they will choose
the future site of the library
from among Southern Methodist
University, University of Dallas,
Baylor University, Texas A & M,
Texas Tech, Midland College,
University ofTexas at Austin, and
the City of Arlington.
Even though the first lady is
on the board of her alma mater,
SMU, and Baylor is near Bush's
ranch, Bush has shown no signs
of favoritism.
In fact, the President's father,
George H. W. Bush, chose Texas
A&M as the site of his own presi-
dential library, though he had no
formal ties to the school.
"The University has a rich
record of community service;,
academic excellence, and its loca-
tion offers students and visitors a
venue to cultivate relationships
and explore new opportunities to
reach their full potential," Lazarus
said.
The details of each proposal
are being kept secret. Those
writing the proposals have not
been in contact with the other
contenders.
Bush has not given any hints as
to which way he is leaning.
According to USA Today, when
asked for information by Texas
reporters, Bush simply said, "It's
going to be in Texas."
The Princeton Review and the
2004 Fiske Guide to Colleges
have both recognized UD as one
of the top liberal arts universities
in America.
The deadline is Sept. 15 for
formal proposals.
