Purpose
The Army Reserve Officers' Training
Corps develops college-educated officers
for the active Army, the Army Reserve and
the National Guard. It provides young men
and young women the opportunity to earn
commissions as Army officers at the same
time they work toward academic degrees.
It also affords the students the opportunity
to pursue either a civilian or a military
career after college completion.
Objectives
The ROTC program provides all university
students an opportunity to obtain
applied leadership training and experience
and to increase their knowledge of
U.S. military affairs. Students will also
acquire skills in the leadership laboratories
which they can use in life-long recreational
hobbies.
Hardin-Simmons University believes
that a strong military force and wellprepared
reserves are essential to the
well-being of the nation. HSU graduates
have a long tradition of leadership and
service in the armed forces. The University
supports the military science program
and its objectives, and it encourages students
to participate in ROTC.
Military Science-Physical
Education Requirements
All students must earn 4 semester hours
of credit in basic military science or physical
education service courses to meet
undergraduate degree requirements.
Students who have served on active
duty in the armed forces may receive upto 4 semester hours of credit toward completion
of their degree requirements. The
Registrar is responsible for the evaluation
of service experience. (See also pp. 15
and 127.)
Program of Instruction
Hardin-Simmons University provides a
general military science curriculum. ROTC
cadets receive general training without
emphasis on any specific branch of the
Army. The curriculum is divided into two
segments: the Basic Program and the
Advanced Program. The Basic Program is
voluntary and is open to all HSU students.
It contains all of the freshman and sophomore
level courses. The Advanced Program,
which is normally taken during the
third and fourth years, is designed to meet
the needs of students desiring an Army
commission. Both the Basic and the
Advanced Programs are described further
below.
The program of instruction is designed
to complement the students' other college
courses and to develop the skills, attitudes,
and the understanding needed to
facilitate their transition into military service.
Students obtain a broad educational
base including, in addition to subjects
integral to their degree field, certain academic
subjects of particular value in both
civilian and military pursuits. Students in
ROTC satisfy some military training
requirements through approved "academic
enrichment" courses offered by
other departments of the University.
Desired learning outcomes for students
and cadets include: a general knowledge_ __ __ ___ __
