For several years the college employed a visiting Director
of the School of Music. This visitation only once
or twice a year was found inadequate. Also the department
has grown to such proportions that a resident Director
has been appointed.
Mr. H. C. Nearing will devote his entire time to this
department and teach the more advanced pupils in Piano
and Pipe Organ.
Mr. Nearing comes to us in September from Blyan,
Texas, having been elected Director of the School of Music
at the annual meeting of the Boaid of Trustees in June.
Both he and his wife are members of the P esbyterian
Chuich, he having had charge of the choir in Bryan, from
which church we have very -flattering reports of his most
unusual success in that city. Mr. Nearing is a graduate
of the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Postgraduate
of the Lachmund Conservatory, Steinway Hall,
New York, and has studied under Sherwood, Boguslawski
and Lachmund, a pupil of F. Liszt. He comes to Daniel
Baker with rich experience of seven yeais of successful
teaching.
Miss Winifred King was a student of violin for many
years in Daniel Baker College under masters. After two
years she graduated in violin from Kidd-Key College and
has since taken graduate work under Paul Vendt. Her
splendid class during the season of 1917-18, promises for her
a future of great success both as a teacher and artist.72
