Department of flusic.
MISS ADELAIDE G. SCHWIEN.
This department has in its use seven pianos and three
organs of which five pianos and two organs are owned by the
University, including an Emerson Cabinet, grand, for chapel
use. Other instruments will be provided as needed, together
with claviers, metronomes, and all necessary help.
It is not our aim to simply qualify pupils to play or sing
a few selections which have been drilled into them, but to so
perfect them by careful discipline as to enable them to instruct
others with the same skill and confidence displayed in de-
veloping their own powers. Methods of instruction will,
therefore, continue to be an item of importance in this depart-
ment.
Great care is taken to give such exercises as will develop
strength and easy movements. Written work is given in all
grades.
The course in pianoforte is divided into six grades. The
first, second and third grades, are devoted to the rudiment of
Notation and Technique. The fourth, fifth and six grades, or
graduating course, to the acquisition of that higher degree of
Technique and general knowledge needed to become compe-
tent teachers.
In the upper grades especially, much time will be devoted
to analysis, interpretation and the rudiments of harmony.
Canidates for graduation will be expected to pass a creditable
examination in these topics. They will also be required to
prepare a paper upon some phase of music, and to give at
least one public recital. Students who complete the pre-
scribed course will be awarded a diploma of the institution.
CHORAL CLASS.
Because of crowded conditions, instruction in vocal music
the past year has been given to the whole school in chapel
twice a week. In the future, regular daily classes will be
formed, when all pupils above certain grades will be required
