Notes

Provenance in bag:
September 28, 1961
This bag was the first velvet bag that Roberta made following a visit of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Marcus to Venice. At that time, she was introduced to the Centuries old firm of Bevilaqua, which firm had been making brocades and velvets for the Vatican. Although Roberta's family had been living in Venice for several hundred years, she was unaware of the existence of this small mill which produces its materials in the same manner in which they were produced 200 years ago.
Mr. Stanley Marcus took a cut of the velvet to Roberta and asked her to make a bag from it. She did and became so intrigued with the fabrics of this mill that she then developed a whole collection of the velvet and cut velvet bags which became the greatest new influence in the bag industry in the 1957 - 60 period. They were copied throughout the entire world in all price ranges. This is the first velvet bag of this particular era of fashion.
