Lee's contract extended;
stadium renovation slated
GRAND SALINE The
Grand Saline School Board
voted to extend Superin-
tendent Nathan Lee s con-
tract for a year and agreed
to start extensive renova-
tion of the football stadium
field and restroom facilities
Monday night.
The decision to extend
I.ee s contract through the
1987 88 school year came
after a closed session. The
-ormer elementary prin
tipal assumed the position
in 1982.
Lee will sit on two com-
mittees formed by the
school board to oversee the
renovation of Persons
Stadium, following a plea
Irom trustee Wiley
Garland III for action.
Pitiful was the term
Garland used for the field
and restroom facilities,
and the other trustees
agreed. Trustee Wayne
Goff related that he had
spoken with some Rains
football players recently
while at work in Emory on
a project. "They told me
that our field was the worst
they'd ever seen and I had
to agree with them," Goff
said.
Garland said the school
faced a similar problem
around 1969 or 1970. At
that time, he said, the field
was disced, plowed as deep
as possible, and leveled,
then seeded, rolled and
fertilized. When all that
was done, he said, “We
had a good field for several
years."
The main problem is the
lack of practice facilities,

Garland pointed out.
“Were using the field to
practice on and for three
games a week,” he said.
“With that kind of use, you
can’t keep grass on it."
The trustees agreed to
set out three areas as possi
ble practice fields: in the
center of the track to the
north of the high school, to
the east of the present
fieldhouse, and to the nor-
theast of the middle school
building.
Trustees Vernon Griffin,
David Darnell, Garland
and Phil Adams were
selected as a committee to
plan and carry out a
renovation of the field sur-
face Trustees Russell
Adams, Walt Bryant Jr.
and Goff formed a com
mittee (the "potty patrol,"
as Garland dubbed it) to
study the renovation of the
public restrooms, with L.ee
and athletic director
Carter Elliott sitting on
both committees
In other business, the
trustees:
-voted to remove
automobiles from the
school tax roll. As the
district is exempt from tax
rollback elections for the
next two years because its
tax rate is below the state
average, the trustees
agreed 10 remove autos
with an eye toward saving
money on collections. The
tax rate can be raised to
cover the lost revenue the
trustees noted.
spent about an hour
discussing the schools
absentee policy in regard
to the unexcused tardy sec
tion. but took no action to
change the policy. While
splits were evident among
the trustees as to the merits
of removing grade points
for unexcused absences
and more than three unex
cused tardies. Garland
noted that the policy had
not been in effect for
enough time to determine
if it would hurt any
borderline students. High
school principal Gerald
Gilbert reported that
students seemed to be tak
ing more of an interest in
academic subjects and get-
ting to school on time since
the policy, which follows
state law, was imposed in
October. Lee was in
structed to prepare a
report on absence* tardies
and their effect on sftwient
grades
agreed to start an in town
bus route to ease over
crowding on two other bus
routes. In a related move,
the trustees approved the
first reading of a policy
allowing working parents
to request student pickup
on a bus within the two
mile state limit. "If parents
have a problem getting
their child to school, we
want to take them into
consideration, Russell
Adams noted

It seems that each had

were next to each other in
