Quotable Quotes
(ACP)
"In many rural schools of the
south rows upon rows of boys and
girls are being drilled in a rou-
tine manner which neither teacher
nor pupils pretend to understand
and which they go through from
day to day in a fatalistic way.
Southern rural schools must come
to grips with the realities of com-
munity living." J. E Brewtoa of
Peabody Teachers College kits the
drab roatlae of rural schools la
the Month.
"Japan Is at war with the Unit-
ed States and Qreat Britain be-
cause her aggression policy had
cost her some 75 per cent of her
normal Imports and because her
economic life was bound up with
the nations blockading her. Thus
Japan is in a state of economic
as well as military siege and she
is extremely vulnerable in both
respects." Ur. William 0. Scroggs
deaa of the graduate school at
Loalsaaa State University says
Japan of all nation was the one
that aeeded aiost to live aader
peaceful trade terns with the rest
of the world.

Buddy Rich the Joltin' Joe
DIMagglo of the drums can't read
a note of music. But he gets along.
The dark-haired youngster with
Tommy Dorsey's band who beats
out the hottest set of "tubs" this
side of the Congo has been ham-
mering that taut skins since the
age of three and uses up more
energy in his efforts than many
a major league baseball player.
Buddy who'll appear on "Spot-
light Bands" with the Dorsey Band
February 10 at 9:30 p.m. over 119
Mutual stations really knocks
those drums around. Once when
playing a date at Auburndale
Mass. Buddy hit a drum so hard
that It landed out In the middle
of the dance floor. His colleagues
later figured the drum traveled
exactly 17 feet.
He never uses music mainly be-
cause he can't read a note. His
only equipment are his traps his
sticks and a big wad of chewing
gum which hu chews furiously as
he gives the beut to Dorsey's boys.
Buddy comes from a family of
vaudevlllians. Just as a gag they
had him go on stage to play drums
when he was so tiny that a snare
drum looked like the Empire State
building. He surprised everyone
including his parents by keeping
time and from that time on they
repeated the "Joke." "Whenever
thoy could wean me away from my
bottle of milk" ho recalls.
He says he spent nine years
traveling uround the world and
speaks three languages English
Brooklynese and Jtve-Jargon. He
drives around in a new custom-
built Liucoln with his initials em-
blazoned In a crest on both doors.
The crest consists of two drum-
sticks and a crash symbol. He's
afraid of the tire shortage which
may deprive him of this pre-pos-slsslng
gonfalon of superiority
over other musicians.
He doesn't mind If you call him
Buddy but he does it you ask him
to spare a dime. Not that he's
stingy he's Just sick of the gag.

The question for this week had
to be a wee bit out of the ordi-
nary as it was to be in a paper
which is quite out of the ordinary.
The answers were derived from
the most frequent with exceptions
and accomplished in that line.

Stop listening for that Voice-that superhuman Voice-to lead
us out of the wilderness of doubt and discord and appiehension.
That voice is within each one of us if only we will stand up
and speak with it free and clear.
A lot of us won't be here lor that two-hundredth bitthday

a success.
