Of Comfort
rJY)NIGHT----when you read and re-read his let-
ter till you know every word in it; tonight____
when he seems far away, turn for comfort and for
courage to the Bible. Perhaps the Book is an old
friend; or perhaps the years have made it and you
strangers. It doesn’t matter—the steadying, eter-
nal light of its message is there for you, ready to
bring you the same confidence that it is bringing
millions tonight all over the world.
Have I not commanded thee? Be strong
and of a good courage; be not afraid,
neither be thou dismayed; for the Lord
thy God is with thee whithersoever..
—JOSHUA, 1:6
The amazing thing about Bible reading is that your reward will
increase as the habit grows. Within its two covers it treats of
every problem that the spirit of man has ever met or will ever
meet. For countless generations, men and women have opened
Jhe Bible and have sought and found restoration of the spirit,
whether torn writh anxiety and loneliness, oppressed by doubt,
crushed writh futility or stunned by bereavement.
The Bible is as ol das Truth; as new as the latest newspaper:
Fear thou not; for I am with thee. Be not dis-
mayed; for 1 am thy God. I will strengthen
thee; yea, 1 will uphold thee with the right
hand of my righteousness. —ISAIAH, 41:10
The patriots hiding in the hills of France, like our own soldiers
of 76 at Valley Forge, may have doubted but they turned to
Psalm 37 and were comforted, and already the promise of the
Psalm has come to pass! Many a timid boy in a foxhole tonight
is reading Isaiah 41:29 and tomorrow his courage will flame
anew. Or perhaps, like Stonewall Jackson, he repeats the words
of Deuteronomy 20:34 as he advances into battle.
