Cancer Researcher Joins TCOM
Dr. Ruthann Masaracchia conducts
research in cancer by watching the
movement of radioactive matter in the
nucleus of the blood ceils of mice.
New to the Texas College of
Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) staff.
Dr. Masaracchia’s major field of study is
radioactive compounds in biochemical
research, applied to cancer study.
She did post-graduate work at the
University of California at Davis, and
was on the staff at the Roswell Park
Cancer Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.
It becomes irregular while the cell is
dividing. In a malignant cell, the DNA is
observed for constant irregularities in
the DNA matter, she said.
Dr. Masaracchia said radioactive
compounds such as radioactive
phosphorus are put in the nucleus of a
cell and their movements are observed.
WHEN DOING research in leukemia,
Dr. Masaracchia uses leukemic mice to
study because their cell structure is
similar to the cell structure of a human.
She said the main difference involves the
cell wall structure.
Tumors that grow in the mice are
taken out and the nucleus is studied. Dr.
Masaracchia looks for changes in the
nucleus and how that may affect the
cell's DNA.
“In a normal cell the DNA composi-
tion is orderly," Dr. Masaracchia said.

Music School Opens
Center For Visitors
A Visitor Center has been established
in the School of Music, programmed
toward prospective NT music students.
The development will provide infor-
mation about the School of Music to
anyone who visits the campus. The
Visiting Center is in Music Building l lb,
but will be moved into the new Music
Building as soon as it is completed.
Prospective students who are uncer-
tain about which area of music to study
can go to the Visitors Center to see a
sound/slide program. This presenta-
tion consists of general background
information about NT, an overview of
the structure of the School of Music and
each of its areas.
The background music in the presen-
tation is performed by the Music School
faculty and President C.C. Nolen con-
tributes an introductory statement about
the School of Music.
The center includes material about
auditions and admissions procedures,
providing counseling for possible incom-
ing students. Catalogs, brochures,
program schedules and audition require-
ments are available, as well as a con-
ference area with administrators and
faculty members in ease the students
have any questions.
The Visitor Center offers specialized
slide and film programs which show in-
structional and program areas in detail.

mature properly. They still circulate,
and use energy but don't perform their
functions properly. They just make the
person very tired," Dr. Masaracchia
said.
According to Dr. Masaracchia,
researchers have tried transplanting the
bone marrow (that makes the red blood
cells in the body) in a child in an effort to
make the marrow produce healthy blood
cells.
This is effective for awhile but the
production of unhealthy cells eventually
resumes, she said.
A rubella screening clinic will be held
in front of the University Store, Oct. 19
from 10 a.m. to noon.
The clinic, provided by the Denton
City-County Health Department (DC-
CHD), is to determine the susceptibility
of females of child-bearing age against
rubella and to build up immunities in
children.
Rubella, also known as German
measles, is a common childhood disease,
however its greatest danger is known to
women during the first trimester of
pregnancy.
Rubella-affected babies defects in-
clude blindness, deafness, heart defects,
mental retardation, cataracts, stillbirths
and miscarriages.
“The program is designed for females
front 18 to 30 years of age, but all
women of child-bearing age should
either come to the clinic at North Texas
or arrange another time to receive the
test,” said Howard Powell, nursing
director at DCCHD.
The normally expensive test will be
given free of charge.
Test results will show- the body's level
of resistance to the Rubella Virus. An
abnormal test result would indicate a
low level of resistance or none at all, and
should be referred to a private physician,
he said.
In stressing the importance of the test
to women of child-bearing age, Powell
said that programs of this type have
helped to prevent epidemic outbreaks
like the one in 1964 when 30,000 infants
were born with severe defects because of
the disease.

To Address
Counselors
Counselor education faculty members
will meet with an advisory council from
9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21 in the
University Union.
The Counselor Education Advisory
Council is composed of professionals ac-
tive in the field of counseling and
guidance, said Dr. Carolyn Maurer of
the education faculty.
The council meeting will begin with a
presentation by Dean James Muro of
the College of Education. He will discuss
the directions of the College of Educa-
tion, focusing on counseling and student
services-
Advisory Council meetings are con-
ducted twice a year. Dr. Maurei s.vd.
THE USE of radioisotopes for
research is relatively small, but more risk
will be involved if nuclear power
generators are used in the future for
energy when oil and coal resources are
consumed, she said.
“There's always a chance for acci-
dents. Eventually we'll have to use
nuclear power, or water or solar energy.
It would be nice if before that time
comes we find a way to dispose of
radioactive wastes safely. They're very,
very active," Dr. Masaracchia said.
