Pecan Gap News
By Isle Ida Campbell
Our sympathy goes to the
family of Albert Marshall
Pickard who passed away
recently in Raymondville,
Texas. Services for Mr.
Pickard were held Saturday in
Raymondville. Marshall was
the uncle of Ed Pickard and
Sharline Garrison Freeman.
Marshall was the younger
brother of the late Lawrence
Edward Pickard and Laurine
Pickard Garrison. At the time
of his death, Marshall was the
oldest practicing Veterinarian in
the state of Texas. Our prayers
are with this family.
Ed and Karen Pickard
attended the funeral of
Marshall Pickard Saturday and
on the way to the funeral in
Raymondville, they stopped in
Austin and ate lunch with their
daughter, Katie.
Wanda White stayed with
grandchildren Reagan and
Caleb Resting for several days
recently in Rockwall while
their parents, Sara and Jeffery
Resting, celebrated their
15^ Wedding Anniversary
in Las Vegas. Wanda and
the grandchildren had much
excitement when the fire
alarms in the house went off
twice in the middle of the night
and they were forced to have
fireman come out to check out
the house for a potential fire.
Thank goodness nothing was
found.
At the Pecan Gap City
Council meeting January
21, 2014, Dewey Marsh was
appointed Alderman for the
City Council to serve out the
term left vacant by George
Haneke. Dewey was sworn in
by the Mayor, Warner Cheney.
We welcome Dewey and hope
that his service to our city wifi
be rewarding.
George and Terry Haneke
have moved to Roxton into
their remodeled home that they
bought several months ago.
George and Terry are proud of
their new home, but are planning
on spending time in Pecan Gap
as usual. A special thanks to
Mary Alice and Sam Stephens
who graciously provided room
and board to George and Terry
for the past several months after
their house burned. Mary and
Sam are to be commended for
the neighborly love and support
that they showed George and
Terry.
Continue to keep Jimmie
King and her family in your
prayers as Jimmie struggles
with cancer. Keep Brain,
Yvette, and Shawn King in your
prayers and remember Jimmie’s
sister, Mary Ann Moss.
According to Peggy Durham,
Pat Cummings is better from

Klondike News
By John & Elizabeth Hopkins
John and I visited my parents
over the weekend and on the
way home we saw a house in
the final stages of construction.
The owner(s) already had
the fence and gate up. But
this is the neat thing. Over
the gate was a “name” sign
proclaiming that this house
was “THE BLESSING”. Not
earth-shaking, I know, but this
simple message touched me
greatly and I thought I’d share

Nelma Dodd had some good
news from the doctor last week.
She is out of her cast/brace and
can now walk with her walker
- some of the time! (Some is
better than none, right?) She
still uses her wheelchair but
that won’t be forever. Her
grandson Brandon and his wife
Melissa and their girls were
back in North Texas this week
for the funeral of Brandon’s
Weir Saturday. They watched
Wesley’s first Upward Bound
ball game with Robert and
Yvonne, Malorie and Daniel
Velazquez and Shirley Evans.
Yvonne says, “It was great.
Robert shot off fireworks that
night for the kids.”
Floyd and Martha Payton
enjoyed a visit with Regina
Payton from Victoria on Fri-
day evening through Monday
morning. Martha reports, “We
had a nice fish dinner at White
Oak Buffet on Saturday eve-
ning, attended church on Sun-
day morning at Tira Methodist.
Our lay speaker David Larkin
brought an inspiring message
with twenty-four in attendance.
Three of their friends attended
also. It was good to have two of
the regulars back after a bout of
father. Please remember this
family during this time.

Joslin came by to help her
move some broken tree limbs.

Larry Tucker, Athletic Direc-

North Hopkins School reports,

their gym with more folks than
the home team. The gym seats
1,200 and it was almost full.
The JV girls played a great
game, but lost on a shot with
3 seconds left on the clock by
one point. The JV boys then
pounded the Warrior JV boys.”

that is why I love them and am
proud of them. There is not one
ounce of quit in any of them.
The varsity boys put on show,

An Engineering
Marvel
In the summer of 1935, my
brother, John, got word that
Elmo Bridges had completed
a magnificent tree house, and
he thought he would go over
to Elmo’s house and check it
out. John was nine years old at
the time, and mother thought it

I was four. I had never seen a
tree house, and I was excited to
not only see it but to go up into
it.
When we arrived we quickly
discovered that the reports of
Elmo’s tree house were not
exaggerated. To me, it was an

absolute marvel of engineering,
perfect in every way. But my
hopes of going up into the tree
house were quickly dashed.
John was allowed to go up
into the tree house, but Elmo
decided that I was too young.
So I had to stay on the ground
to admire this amazing structure
from below. It was to me a great

work of both engineering and
art. Fara Faye, Elmo’s sister,
told me that they spent many
happy hours in that tree house.
This story has a sad ending.
Elmo enlisted in the Marines,
and in March of 1945 he was
killed on Iwo Jima, almost
exactly ten years after he
completed the tree house.
In 1980 I drove back through
that area. All the houses were
gone, but the road still went
past where the Bridges family
had lived. I stopped there to see
the tree where that tree house
had been built 45 years before.
To my astonishment a 2x6
board, maybe eight feet long,
was up in the tree. It had to
be the last remaining evidence
that a young boy had once built
a marvelous tree house there
so long ago. It almost brought
tears to my eyes.
