Charleston & Lake Creek News
By Vicki Vasco
We have really been having
some cold gloomy weather in
the East End. The only thing
good about it is that it is not
freezing.
The United Daughters of
the Confederacy met Friday,
January 9, at the Paris Public
Library. Susan Martin, the
president of the group led the
ritual. The hostesses were
Susan Martin, Debbie Stuart,
and Shirley Smith. Debbie
Stuart presented the program
on the Battle of Parkers’
Crossroads, which took place
in 1862. Debbie had visited
the battlefield recently, and she
showed pictures of it and talked
about it. One of our members,
Mary Jo Barbee, had recently
passed away.
The Delta United Methodist
Women met Thursday evening,
Jan. 8, in the Enloe United
Methodist Church Fellowship
Hall. Twelve attended that
meeting. Nancy Duncan
presented the program, and
Donna King was the hostess.
The next meeting will be
Thursday, February 5, in the
home of Betty Wiggins in
Charleston.
Jalie Kay Swain’s 8^ grade
basketball team from Chisum
played Hooks Thursday
evening. The Chisum team
won. They did a good job. Jalie
made several points. Dawson
Hammer’s Elementary team
from Chisum played basketball
Saturday against Prairieland.
Chisum won that game. They
did well. Dawson made some
points. Katie went to both
games. She always goes to see
her grandchildren play ball.
Dawson spent some quality
time with his grandmother
while he was out of school for
the holidays.
Fifteen women attended the
AgriLife meeting at the Delta
County Civic Center Monday,
Jan. 5. Sisters, Marilyn Thurman
and Melissa Millard were the
guest speakers. Marilyn owns
the Red Door Antique Shop,
and Melissa works for Cooper
Home Health. They talked
about turning antiques into
treasured objects of art. It was
a very interesting meeting.
The East Delta Baptist
Church is having a ladies’
conference Friday, Feb.6
and Saturday. Feb, 7. The
title of this conference is “If:
Gathering,” that was originally
held in Austin. East Delta
is providing this conference
locally via video link. If you
wish to attend, just call the
church.
Jade Phillips started her
student teaching at Chisum
I.S.D. Monday, Jan. 5. She
will be graduating from A &
M-Commerce in May, 2015.
James and Dana Garza and
their two sons have returned to
Corpus after spending several
days in Charleston visiting
their grandparents and great
grandmother. Dana teaches in
Corpus.
Don Young is out of rehab
and at home, doing lots better.
Nancy Duncan, Marsha
Cunningham, Macy Madewell,
and Shirley Lancaster went to
Detroit Lakes, Minnesota for a
few days between Christmas
and New Years. They stayed
at a Lodge directly on Detroit
Lake, which was frozen over,
and they watched people ice
fish on it. They could .just
walk outside their door a few
feet and be on the lake. Marsha
and Macy went snow skiing on
the mountain while Nancy and
Shirley stayed inside the ski
lodge and watched and took
pictures. They enjoyed the spa
while there also. The highest
temperature was 2 degrees
below zero and the lowest was
11 below zero. Mary stayed
a few more days with friends
and went ice skating on the
lake and went on to the Gland
Forks, North Dakota, and then
to Fargo, North Dakota. They
really did have a good time.
The Worship Leader Sunday
at the Methodist was Shane
Ingram, and Jackie Huie was
the Children’s Leader. Special
music was furnished by David
Moody, Jerry and LouJane
Brandenburgh. They played
and sang “Heaven is Real.” It
was beautiful. Our crowd was
smaller because of the bad
weather.

south of Paris. Brenda passed
away Friday, Jan. 2. Brenda
was one of my former students
at Delmar. Her dad was John
Sanders.
Our condolences are for the
family and friends of John Click
of Grand Prairie, formerly of

Hospital in Bonham.
Have a good week!
Klondike News
By John & Elizabeth Hopkins
Boy, it is still winter in
Klondike. But at least the ice
was minimal and left quickly.
I know we need the rain, but
some sunshine would be very
welcome now.
I must make apologies to
the Foster family. Last week
I stated that Dustin’s baby was
named Dawson. However,
Dawson is actually the name
of Daniel’s baby. Sorry for the
mix-up, folks.
Jerry and Faye Robnett had
David and Hunter make a short
surprise visit over the weekend.
It was sort of a Christmas visit
and the visitors left for home on
Sunday morning. Also, Jerry
and Faye had supper with Josh
and Holly last week. They
got to see their “new-to-them”
home. Everyone enjoyed the
visit and are looking forward to
more.
Wanda Helms said two of
her girls are on their way home
from San Antonio. Kendra and
Pebbles have been there since
Thursday with the Beta Club.
Too bad, though, because they
missed out on the chicken and
dumplings Wanda made for
Sunday lunch! (I bet Wanda
saved a couple of bowls for
them, though.)

The next City Council
Meeting for the City of Pecan
Gap will be January 20, 2015,
6:30 p.m. at the City Hall.
The public is invited to attend
this meeting as the Honorable
Mayor Barbara Woodruff,

ordinances that their fair city
have incorporated and seem

city council session.
A large crowd attended the
Farewell Party given Brad
Stallings Thursday night at the
Pecan Gap Community Center.
Brad has been the Postmaster
for the Pecan Gap Post Office
for the past eight years and will
be retiring soon. The pot luck
supper was excellent and it was
so good to visit with friends
and neighbors and visit with
Brad, his wife Pam and his two
sons Alex and Nicholas. Brad
was given a beautiful Mantel
Clock with special engraving
to show our appreciation for
all the help and consideration
that he has shown us Pecan
Gap folks through the years.
Christel Shetler, who has also
done a great job as part time
postal clerk, will be serving as
Postal Clerk for the post office
in the morning hours after Brad
retires. We wish her well.

Pickard were hostesses to
the Ladies Club Meeting

much.

a friend went to Buffalo on a
hunting trip, but the weath-
er was awful and they came
home empty-handed.” Later
Kim informed me that Jason
had left Paris before the terror
attacks and had made it safely
to Prague.
Ellis and Debbie Dicus report
We were sorry to hear about
the death of Jim Lipscomb. He
was an electrical technician
at Kimberly-Clark and a
faithful member of the United
Pentecostal Church where he
had been a music minister and
choir director. He was blessed
with a beautiful voice. He
wrote and sang songs to and
about the Lord. Our sympathy
goes out to his family.
I hope everyone has a great
week. Enjoy life. Spread the
love and joy!
having a great Christmas. All
their kids were home, except
for their grandson, who is sta-
tioned in Okinawa, Japan and
their granddaughter, Amanda
Bisenius, who was in Missis-
sippi with her fiance, for a sur-
prise birthday party. The fam-
ily has been getting ready for
Amanda’s wedding, which is
this weekend at Peerless Bap-
tist Church.
Chip and I visited Larry and
Dorothy Fitzgerald in Somer-
ville last weekend. We attend-
ed church with them on Sun-
day. While there we enjoyed
visiting, eating, and, of course,
playing cards. Larry and Chip
enjoyed beating Dorothy and
me, but we agreed that the guys
had all the luck!
I always need and appreci-
ate input from my friends to
help keep me informed of

Enloe News
By Jill York
There was a hot Phase 10
game going on at the George
household. Misty, Bayleigh,
Larry, Tanner and Gus were
entertaining themselves on a
rainy Sunday night.
Steve and Tina Rainey were
sick last week with the virus
going around. (Some of you
can sympathize with them, I’m
sure.) They were “trading”
it with Jeremy and Lindsay
and the four of them kept
passing Elise back and forth
successfully because she did
not get it.
Patricia Blundell attended
the 95th birthday of Imogene
Boles on Sunday. For one of
her gifts, Imogene got her very
first manicure! What fun! The
party was well attended and
everyone enjoyed a big meal
featuring a huge birthday cake.
Congratulations to Imogene!
Gerald and Maggie Thurman
attended the Lion’s Club
meeting last Thursday. Carley
from the Social Security office
was the featured speaker
and brought lots of good
information for the group. As
usual, they had a great lunch
at the Bulldog Cafe served
by Heather Murray’s Home
Economics class. On Saturday
Maggie met Diane on Dog
Town Road and everyone went
to Greenville for haircuts.
Unfortunately, bad weather
caused New Life Baptist
Church to cancel the nursing
home ministry on Sunday
evening. Better safe than sorry
and there is always next week,
God willing.
