top of the World Trade Center,
where Dona worked from 1981 to
1989, and where her sister Barbara
still worked. Then, a memorial ser-
vice at noon for their mother across
the street at St. Paul’s Parish of the
Trinity.
On Saturday, Dona took her
daughter as a tourist to see the city,
and snapped a picture of the World
Trade Centers from the ferry
moments after sunrise. Sunday, she
took her daughter to a Broadway
play, Beauty and the Beast.
Tuesday, Sept. 11 the day to go to
the World Trade Center and to
honor the grandmother she never
met.
They were in Tower Two on their
way up to join their family and
friends for the beginning of a day of
remembrance when the plane went
in to Tower One. Garcia and her sis-
ters were all late, or they too, would
have been at the top. Despite the
assurances that it was safe to stay or
return to Tower Two, Garcia got out
of the building with her daughter, to
what became hell on the streets. She
didn’t know until late afternoon her
sisters were alive. They lived, but
they lost 37 members of their family
and friends that horrific day.
A volunteer with Red Cross
Disaster Relief, Garcia went to
work. She took picture after picture,
despite the heat that melted the film
in one of her disposable cameras, for
use later. She didn’t need any pic-
tures herself to remember the sights,
sounds and smells that were indeli-
bly seared into her soul. Pictures
that are now famous, pictures that
were used to identify people who
jumped from the inferno, pictures
that became part of the Red Cross
pool of photographs.
Garcia volunteered at the Chelsea
St. Station temporary morgue, and
identified the body of her dear friend
Pamela Boyce. Pamela, who taught
Dona how to dance for her wedding.
Dona returned one year later, for
the moving memorial service at
Ground Zero, and the reading of the
names.
Then she started talking about
9/11, not just about her own stagger-
ing losses, but about what we as a
nation lost that day. Each personal
story is special to someone, and
none should ever be forgotten.
She says she will have to talk
about it for the rest of her life in
order to cope, and she has come a
long way since she first spoke about
it. She talks about forgiveness,and
how she was able to forgive those
individuals who did this, for her
own sake. “Hatred and anger are

sins, and sin is sin, regardless of
what it is, it’s still wrong,” Garcia
said. “I have faith in God, and I
believe you can’t move forward and
walk with God if you can’t forgive.”
To those who are still fdled with
anger and question why God could-
n’t have saved everyone that terrible
day, Garcia says, “Look at what
happened. Almost 3,000 people died
that day, a terrible thing. But there
should have been 50,(XX) people in
those buildings at that time. God
WAS there, in the restaurant at the
top, in those stairwells, in that
plane.”
Garcia says healing is a process,
and she definitely still has her
moments of grief and loss. One of
her sisters turned away from God
and has given up on prayer. But
Dona’s faith is stronger that it ever
has been. “Dealing with grief and
loss can take over your life. Put your
trust in God and let him deal with it
in his own time. This isn’t about
humanity, it’s about divine interven-
tion.”
She was able to transform her
own anger and grief after hearing a
pastor speak “about forgiveness, and
the need to forgive those who have
hurt you, to fill the hole in your own
heart. It’s just wasting energy being
mad at the terrorists instead of using
that energy to talk about positive
people. I didn’t like myself when I
was hating people, dead people at
that. It’s a waste of time and life is
too precious.”
Dona Garcia says her ministry is
not about her, but about all those
gone that day. Nevertheless, she is a
remarkable woman with a powerful
and compelling message.
She will be speaking at the First
United Methodist Church at 2572
Church St. in Ingleside Sept. 4 at
8:30 and 10:45 a.m., at St. John’s in
Corpus Christi on Sept. 10, at the

PETS OF THE WEEK
WENDY and CHANG
Wendy is a two year old Rat Terrier mix; a full
grown little girl at only 12 lbs. She was found as
a stray and is a loving girl so quiet you almost
forget she is even there. She gets so excited
when it is time to go outside. She never ’goes’ in
her pen and gets along with all the other animals
in tne shelter. She is also well behaved with
strangers and children. Please come by and see
if this little sweetheart is right for your nome.
Chang is a gorgeous boy about four months
old whose Mom was a chocolate Burmese, she and his sister Ing were adopted
into wonderful homes but this leaves poor Chang all alone. Very well socialized,
he gets along great with other cats and ignores the dogs. Is this handsome little
guy the one for you? _
Come see the many dogs and cats, including
purebreds, hoping for homes at:
