Burton R. Hurley, Supt., Throckmorton Inde-
pendent School is presented the Distinguished
Service Award of the Vocational Agriculture
Teachers Association of Texas by Sidney Long
of Gail, president of the organization. The
award was presented at the annual awards
program for his dedicated service as a school
administrator in the Texas Public School Sys-
tem.
Father of Local Rancher Dies
W. H. Batchler, 90,
ranchman and promi-
nent and public spirit-
ed businessman of Mi-
neral Wells, died at 6:45
a.m. July 17 at a local
nursing home in Min-
eral Wells, where he had
been seriously ill for
several weeks.
Funeral services
were held at 10:00 a.m.
Wednesday, July 18 with
Rev. Billie R. Boyd, St.
Luke’s Episcopal Mi-
nister, officiating, in-
terment was at the Lan-
caster, Texas Edgewood
Cemetery.
Mr. Batchler is sur-
vived by his wife, at the
home in Mineral Wells,
a son, J. B. Batchler,
on the Batchler Ranch in
Throckmorton County,
three grandchildren,
Jim Batchler of the
Throckmorton Ranch,
Mrs. Anna Leongomez,
of Houston, and Mrs.
Mary Gaggino of De-
troit. Also ten great-
grandchildren. Two sis-
ters survive, Mrs. Eva
Duff of Ferris and Mrs.
Mary Lou Greathouse of
Ft. Worth.
The deceased was a
native of Ferris, born
in that city on Septem-
ber 20, 1882. He and
Miss Mabel Murphy
were married in Lan-
caster in 1907. The cou-
ple moved to Mineral
Wells and had made
their home there since.
He was known through-
out -the Southwest m
ranching circles for hie
knowledge and leader-
ship in cattle and ranch-
ing; was a member and
one of the organizers
of the Palo Pinto Coun-
ty Livestock Associa-
tion. He was quite active
Throckmorton Ranch
untilrecently when his
son, J. B., took over
the ranch and the man-
agement.
His death marks the
end of one of Texas lea-
ders in the ranching in-
dustry and in business
circles.
Local
Mrs. Ida Gilmore ac-
companied her son,
Bernard, to Wichita
Falls Saturday visiting
relatives.
Mrs. Ferril Jackson
accompanied Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Kelley of
Graham to California on
Sunday.
