You will proceed with Capt. Fannins Division to the missions
of San Juan Espardo [Espada] an [d] San Jose and examine the
state and situation of those places. 1The quantity of corn and other
provisions, the disposition of the inhabitants to the cause we are
defending where the Caballado is and all other information of
an interesting or important nature. Also endeavour to procure a
number of cart loads of corn and beans to be brought here without
delay. It is important to keep possession of one of the missions
as it will secure supplies of provisions and also protect the La
Bahia road. You and Capt. Fannin will however use your dis-
cretion as to retaining possession at this time.

can

The first Division of the first Batallion, under the command of
James Bowie, is ordered to proceed forth with to the Missions of
San Juan Espada and San Jose, for the purpose of gaining in-
formation in regard to the present condition of those places-the
supplies of corn there-the disposition of the inhabitants and other
purposes as expressed in the instructions given to the commander
of the detachment-with discretion to keep possession of one of
the missions if deemed expedient.
