Perhaps the best reason for this lasting impression is found in
the dedication of the 1-96o Pedagog-it called him a "master teacher."
Those who had him for a course swore by him and those that didn't
said they always intended to take one course under him.
Last year a series of social science lectures was instituted in his
honor and will continue annually.
Dr. Taylor did much to improve the quality of social science
teaching in Texas and played a leading role in the establishment
of the annual conference of the Texas Council for social studies in
1953- ...
Wednesday they honored Dr. Taylor by dismissing classes-al-
though this seemed a small thing to do for someone who gave so
much of his life to the College. Dr. Taylor will be remembered for
his courage, determination, work, and contributions to education.
It is quite true that James Taylor, like his old teacher and
friend Walter P. Webb, stood with the rest of us at the edge of
a renaissance in higher education in Texas. He, too, would have
loved to help cudgel it into shape and aim it toward the heights
that both of these men understood so well.
