William T. Mathews, older brother of the well-known western artist
Alfred E. Mathews, was born in Bristol, England, in 1821. In 1833 he im-
migrated with his family to Ohio, where he began his painting career in
the 184os. During the 185os and 186os he had a studio in New York City.
Much of his later work was done in Washington, D.C., where he painted a
number of portraits, including those of presidents Lincoln, Rutherford B.
Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley.
Mathews died in Washington in 1905.
