Opposite page: San Antonio artist Harry Anthony de Young painted this picture
of Davy Crockett at the Alamo in 1937. Jose Enrique de la Peiia's controversial
diary, published in 1955, challenged the view that Crockett died fighting fero-
ciously, maintaining instead that the hero was executed as a helpless prisoner af-
ter the battle. As James E. Crisp demonstrates in an article beginning on page
261 of this issue, recent attempts to discredit the de la Pefia diary and defend
the legend of Crockett's death as depicted here have been less than convincing.
