This striking photographic image is a formal portrait ofJ. F. Robinson, a
Confederate private in Capt. James Duff's Company of Texas Partisan
Rangers (Co. A, 33rd Texas Cavalry), who was involved in the controver-
sial Battle of the Nueces, August o1, 1862. Private Robinson, later pro-
moted to corporal and eventually captain, was one of the Confederate
soldiers wounded in that affair. For generations some have claimed that
the battle was in fact a massacre-a term applied to this incident largely
because of the belief that unarmed German farmers were pursued and
murdered by Confederate cavalrymen. A handwritten note on Robin-
son's Confederate records has a different view of the incident: "Absent
sick at Ft. Clark from wounds received in engagement with traitors, on
Nueces River, Aug. to, 1862." On page 65 of this issue, Stanley
McGowen investigates the nature of the affair in "Battle or Massacre?
The Incident on the Nueces, August lo, 1862." In a second article on
the Civil War in Texas in this issue, "Fighting for the Confederacy: The
White Male Population of Harrison County in the Civil War," author
Randolph B. Campbell tackles another controversial question: the level
of participation of white males in military service for the Confederacy.
The ambrotype of Robinson featured on the cover is from the collection
of Lawrence T. Jones III, a longtime friend and colleague whose remark-
able collections of Texas and Civil War images have been used in num-
erous TSHA publications over the years. Larry's generosity and his many
contributions to the research, publication, and collection of Texas and
Civil War history are much appreciated. In recognition of his many good
works, the Lawrence T. Jones III Reserach Fellowship in Civil War Texas
History was recently established. The first official notification of this new
fellowship for 2001 is on page 159 of this issue. Please encourage those
working in the field of Civil War Texas studies to apply for the fellowship.
