any combat. Most of the volunteers who went overseas went-as did the
First Texas-as occupation troops long after the shooting had stopped.
Soldiers from a dozen states did not even have that opportunity, but spent
their entire time in service in stateside camps. None of them faced the fire
of Spanish Mausers, but fifty-eight of them died of disease, and four more
died as a result of accidents or murder. Although none of the Texas units
saw combat, that should not diminish the patriotism exhibited by these
men.52
