KIWANIS CLUB NEWS
CONGRATULATIONS to JOHN
H. GUYER on his election as
Principal of Denton Senior High
School. We wish him much hap-
piness and success as he steps
up to new responsibilities. AND
to our Past-President A. O. “rof.”
CALHOUN whom Johnny is suc-
ceeding, we extend our warmest
good wishes for a happy life of
retirement and may he never fail
to “land the big ones.” . . . We
regret to learn that another one
of our Past-Presidents, L. W.
Newton, is ill in Baylor Hospital;
that he underwent major surgery
last week and is reported improv-
ing satisfactorily. We all wish
for him a speedy return to good
health . . . Our speaker for the
Tuesday of Holy Week will be
that long-time Kiwanian, Dr. J.
Hoytt-Boles.
Spaciousness and ease of access,
privacy when desired, ample stor-
age for all the varied aquipment
of an active family, minimum
maintenance — these were the
prime determining factors in the
design of the new contemporary
home of Dr. and Mrs. Freeman
Rowell on Mimosa Drive.
From the carport one walks un-
der roof to either the front or
service entrance. The front en-
trance, screened from both living
and dining rooms, leads into a
lofty central area, which includes
living room, dining room, and—
through sliding glass doors — a
large porch extending beyond the
roof to an open terrace.
The den and master bedroom, at
opposite ends of the house, look
into private gardens; the kitchen,
across a snack bar from the den,
has a broad window overlooking
a large play area. Between the

& Mrs. Harold E. Harman south
of town. The Harman’s purchased
the old Vaughn home place three
years ago and they have done
everything possible to make their
farm one of the most outstanding
small farms in this area. The Har-
mon’s latest project is a private
swimming pool. We in this area,
look upon the swimming pools as a
luxury, while in some areas, like
Phoenix, Ariz., they are considered
standard equipment.
WELCOME MR. WELCOME
Mr. Welcome Wilson and his
fine family have recently moved
to Denton from Houston. Mr. Wil-
son is Regional Director of Fed-
eral Civil Defense for Region 5
which includes the States of Tex-
as, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkan-
sas and New Mexico. The main
offices for Region 5 are in Den-
ton and have been for the past
two years. After talking to Mr.
Wilson and his assistane, Mr.
Gaines West, we were interested
in knowing more about Civil De-
fense and people who are con-
nected with it.
These people with Civil Defense
are interested in becoming per-
bedrooms is the linen and laundry
center, with linen storage, clothes
hamper, washer, and dried all in
one compact step-saving arrange-
ment. The house is completely air-
conditioned.
Materials were chosen for dur-
ability and ease of maintenance,
as well as beauty. The exterior is
of brick and redwood. The high
central area is floored with brick;
other floors are carpet, cork, or
vynl. The built-in buffet has a
marble top; kitchen counters,
sinks, dishwasher, cooking top, and
even are all stainless steel. Plas-
tic dome skylights provide addi-
tional light for some areas. This
new home is just west of the Deats
P.eadlees.
Mount-Miller designed and su-
pervised the house; Bert Moore
was the general contractor; Owen
Jones was the interior decorator.
manent residents of our city. Civil
Defense has brought twenty new
families to Denton. Of the twenty
families, twelve have already pur-
chased homes, four families are in
the process of buying or building
new homes and the remaining
four plan to buy or build in the
near future. Welcome Mr. Wel-
come and your people.
(Thanks to L. L. McAninch for
information for the above stories.)
MELVIN MUNN
Many helpful suggestions to Key
Club members and their dads were
made by Melvin Munn in an ad-
dress at the weekly Kiwanis meet-
ing Tuesday. He said an under-
standing of the point of view of
the younger fellows would make
it possible for older people to be
more helpful to youth.
So far as this writer was con-
cerned, the key sentence in the
address was, “I’d rather see a
sermon than to hear one any day.”
NAT NOLES
OPTIMIST PRESIDENT
We now have a new name to
put before you for the office of
president: Nat Noles was selected
by you and the nominating com-
mittee to serve as president for
1956-1957. Nat has the qualifica-
tions to make the best president
the Denton Optimist Club has
ever had. As you know, Nat has
a fine wife, Toby, who will be one
of his best workers; also in his
family is the boss, Lynn, his eight
year old daughter. Nat lives at
1610 Greenwood.
