To All My Wonderful Friends:
My heart is full of gratitude
for the blessings that are mine
. . . that a kind Providence
has spared my wife and two
children from what could have
been a fatal accident; and, for
my friends.
My wife and children were
on their way from Austin to
Plainview on Friday, May 4th,
when they v/ere involved in an
accident near Hamlin. The
children were dismissed from
the Hamlin Hospital on May
10th and on May 16th, we mov-
ed Sharleen to the Plainview
Hospital where she will be for
some time. But, we are thankful
that we are all back in Plain-
view and in one piece.
As to the election ... We
are very thankful to all our
friends in Texas who did so
much to help us. Our friends
worked hard and we got a good
vote, a vote we can be proud
of. But, we were up against two
political machines and too
much money.
The Texans who voted for us
were ones who wanted good,
sound, honest government. They
wanted a progressive Texas, but
they wanted their money spent
wisely.
We have no suggestions
to make as to voting in the
run-off. We came out of the
campaign on good, friendly
terms with all the other guber-
natorial candidates. I consider
them all my friends. Texans
who were intelligent enough to
vote for us, are more than in-
telligent enough to vote wisely
in the run-off campaign without
my suggestions or recommenda-
tions. I do urge everyone to
vote.
We carried 54 counties. We
were second in many more.
Our voters were proud voters
and did not have to apologize
to anyone for their vote.
Again, I want to express my
thanks for all that you have
done - for without your help,
your contributions, and your
prayers I could not have begun
to do the task that was before
us.
God bless you and your’s.
Sincerely,
Marshall Formby

Aerial Mesquite
Control Advised
For Southwest
There are several methods foe *
controlling mesquite, but one of
the most economical and prac-
tical for Texas is the aerail ap-
plication of 2,4,5-T. This method
is usually used on relatively -,>
pure stands of mesquite, ex-
plains G. O. Hoffman, extension
range specialist.
For the aerial application of
2,4,5-T to produce the desired
results, several factors must be
present. There should be plenty
of soil moisture to make the
mesquite grow vigorously and
produce a dense foliage. At the
time of spraying, the foliage
should be dark green. Hoffman
says that this year the mes-
quite foliage is in the best con-
dition in several years, and
good results should be obtained
from aerial control provided the
moisture situation remains fa-
vorable.
Also, if rain falls during the
spraying season, it is advisable
to wait until the new leaf tip
growth has turned dark green.
This usually takes about two
weeks. ^ i*
The chemical mixture to use
for aerial control of mesquite is ^
1/2 pound of 2,4,5-T, 1 gallon of
diesel oil, and enough water to
make four gallons of mixture. ^
This four gallons of chemical
should be applied to one acre
in a manner that insures com-
plete coverage of the foliage.
Hoffman says a miracle
should not be expected. The
total root kill under ideal con-
ditions is 25 to 35 per cent. The
initial control will last from 5
to 7 years before spraying of
the regrowth is necessary.
After the spraying, the pas-
ture should be deferred to allow
the grass to re-establish. Graze
it during the winter, defer it
the second growing season, then
use it properly. The extra grass
is what pays for the brush con-
trol practice.
If it rains in the mesquite
country within the next two
weeks, it may be advisable to
spray every acre of mesquite in
Texas, says Hoffman.
