Traffic deaths in Texas have road if you expect to have a
increased ten per cent in the merry Christmas and a happy
first ten months of 1958, and New Year!"
Sergeant D. R. Dowdy of the
Texas Highway Patrol — an-
ticipating heavy travel during
the holiday period ahead — has
urged Cottle County motorists to
assist in pushing the decrease
even lower.
Cottle County has had no
traffic fatalities in the ten-
month period according to Sgt.
Dowdy. This year’s county
death toll compares to two fa-
talities in the same period of
1957. King County shows no
fatalities in this period, com-
pared with seven last year.
The Sergeant pointed out that
of the 60 counties in Region No.
5 of the Department of Public
Safety, 25 counties show a total
increase of 74 traffic deaths
compared to the same period of
last year, while 35 counties have
had a total decrease of 103 fa-
talities.
Sgt. Dowdy said 241 traffic
deaths have been counted dur-
ing the first ten months of 1958
in DPS Region No. 5, which is
a reduction of 29 deaths from
the total of 270 in the Region
for the same period in 1957.
Pleading with motorists to
continue the reduction of fatali-
ties in the Region during the
remainder of the year, the Ser-
geant cautioned drivers to be
especially alert.
“Careful planning of trips
during the holiday period and
cooperation with other users of
the highways will pay off in
lives saved,” the Sergeant said.
“Drive safely, sanely, defensive-
ly, and comply voluntarily with
all traffic rules,” he urged. “It
will help insure a happy holiday
for everyone.
The Sergeant cautioned mo-
torists to drive at a speed that
fits in smoothly with the speed
of other vehicles. He pointed
out that this is especially im-
portant in rural areas where
speed gives the driver less time
to think in an emergency situa-
tion and increases the severity
of an accident.
“Remember, you’re not alone
on the streets and highways,”
Sgt. Dowdy said. “Share the
