Loren J. YoungAugust 1945 -Thirteen divisions of Convair,
including Fort Worth, out-produce every other aircraft
manufacturer during WWII. Between Pearl Harbor and
VE. Day, Convair produced 33,000 planes. The total
tally included 9,760 B-24 Liberators, 11,531 BT-13
Valiants and 3,590 L-5 Sentinels.
Aug. 24, 1952 - The Lockheed Hercules YC-130
prototype is flown for the first time, signaling the begin-
ning of the longest-running, continuous, active military
aircraft assembly line in history.Aug. 20, 1954 - Convair Fort Worth's VP and
manager, August Esenwein, discloses officially for the
first time that a "small, lower-power research reactor"
for the U.S. Air Force in now in operation at the plant.
From the start, Convair employees had known about the
project, which was used for several years as a radiation
source for testing in the development of nuclear propul-
sion for aircraft. Employees working at the reactor were
trained at Atomic Energy Commission facilities.
Aug. 1, 1955 - Lockheed's U-2 is flown for the first
time. The U-2, a high-altitude, strategic reconnaissance
and special research aircraft, achieved fame during
reconnaissance missions that discovered Soviet missiles
in Cuba.
August 1945 - By the end of WWII, Convair
had produced some 33,000 aircraft for the war effort.Aug. 4, 1954 - The last B-36 is delivered to the U.S. Air Force, bringing the total to 385 of the bombers for the Strategic Air Command.
Included in that total were more than 13,000 BT-13
Valiants for the Army and a variation, the SNV-1, for
the Navy. Powered by a P&W Wasp engine, the rugged
Valiant had a max speed of 164 mph and a range of
560 miles. After the war, many pilots acquired surplus
Valiants and licensed them for their personal use.
August 1962 - The Lockheed P3V-I Orion, later
designated the P-3A, joins the fleet during delivery
ceremonies at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
It was the first new sub hunter to join the Navy since
the Neptune had 17 years earlier.
Aug. 23, 1965 - F- 111 No. 1 makes its first Mach
2 flight at the D/FW plant. Veteran test pilot Dick
Johnson took the F-I 1 lA to 40,000 feet and swept back
the wings to a limit of 2.5 degrees before assaulting the
twice-the-speed-of-sound barrier.
August 1975 - F-16 manufacturing begins.
August 1977 - The first two-seat F-16 fighter trainer
performs its maiden flight.

early-warning-and-control version of its P-3 Orion
aircraft.
August 1997 - A USAF C-141 modified by
Lockheed Martin completes 500 hours of flight with
electric-powered, flight-control actuators like those
demonstrated by an F-16 in the company's Joint
Strike Fighter/Integrated Subsystem Technology
(J/IST) contract.
Aug. 20, 2002 - The T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic
trainer prototype for South Korea makes its first flight
at Korea Aerospace Industries in Sachon.Ethics questions or concerns? Call 817-777-1400 in Fort Worth or 1-800-826-7481 outside the area.
