Director of Mangy fcuring Developmentne of the most successful fighter aircraft produc-
tion programs in aviation history is being carried
out at a place ironically nick-named "the bomber
plant." Located on the rolling plains of North-central
Texas, Air Force Plant No. 4 occupies the land imme-
diately west of the main runway at Carswell Air Force
Base. The plant was built in the early days of-World
War of to produce B-24 Liberator bombers; and a
succession of other famous airplanes would follow,
including the B-36 Peacemaker and the B-58 Hustler.
in the sixties, the bomber plant experienced a transi-
uon from pure bomber production when the swing-
wing F/FB-111 was introduced. But a real break with
tradition occurred with the F-16 Fighting Falcon - a
small, single-engine, multirole, lightweight fighter.
The F-16 contrasts sharply with the old B-36-an air-
craft so massive that it was difficult to get the finished
article out of the building.
But if you look carefully - down there beneath the

notice that a lot more is changing than just the shape,
size, and type of airplanes being produced. The plant
itself is in an unparalleled state of change as new tech-
nologies rapidly alter the way the industry does busi-
ness. Survival in today's competitive environment
requires a willingness to change. And the Fort Worth
Division has often been the catalyst of technological
change. It was here that "variable-sweep wing"Technology modernization eforts at
