Apathy Controversy Must End;
Work Towards Spirit Must Begin
By Bill Caruthers
During the last few issues I have been writing
about school spirit or the lack there of. I had a goal in
mind when writing these editorials. My goal was
simple. I wanted to write about apathy so that someone
might be offended enough that something (hopefully a
rally of spirit) would be ignited. Well something
definitely was ignited. This week we broke the all-time
record for letters to the editor.
This is a record which I doubt will be coveted by
too many writers. It is a record which I accept with
mixed emotions. Overall between Mr. Potter's and his
fiancee and Christine Deadman and Noelle Anzalone
the opinions balanced out. I can only hope that this is a
sign that half of the campus is in favor of waking up
the "Big Spirit" which once roamed so freely around
Howard Payne's campus.
However it is also a sign that some people on the
campus are not so enthusiastic to make an effort of
bringing back traditions.
Still I believe that it will only take a few dedicated
individuals to spark the spirit. A few individuals who
are ready to work or willing to make a sacrifice for a
dream.
From now on the sacrifice will not entail griping at
those who do not wish to partake but rather
motivating those who do. Drawing the spirit together at
games and school events will be a valid attempt.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 states "Though one may be
overpowered two can defend themselves. A threefold
cord is not quickly broken"
In my opinion neither will be a rally of a few
spirited classmates!

Have you ever wondered exactly why it is
that every time you do your stinking
laundry one sock is always missing? Well
my friends yearn for this nugget of truth no
longer! A conclusive in-depth study conducted
jointly by the Harvard school of physics the
United States Marines and Dr. Stanford's plant
taxonomy class recently revealed the startling
truth. You may have also noticed that there is
always an overabundance of wire hangers in
your closet. This study concluded that these
seeming unrelated events are actually in direct
cohesion. The study revealed that the left sock
of every pair is actually a coat hanger larva.
Letter to the Editor
Yea Bill yea Bill yea. Bill. You have served your purpose.
Those of us who want to see the return of the Big Spirit are way
excited. Those that think we are going overboard are upset. You got
our reactions. Terrific! Now I would like to elaborate upon mine.
My family has been a part of Howard Payne since 1935.
Growing up with Howard Payne as a backbone does not make me
special. If we were to kick out everyone on campus that had no
previous family at Howard Payne we would deeply miss all five or
six of you. So many of us have seen where we were and wonder
where the tradition "aid spirit went. There is a difference between
tradition (freshmen drums twerp day Veda serenades) and school
policy (PDA every day chapel 10 PM curfew). We want back the
tradition that built spirit in a positive manner.
I'm your new Stinger and I've started building spirit early. I'm
going to make sure you guys are at every ball game. If I have to eat
fire to get you there I will. I'm going to keep the crowd (that would
be you) enthusiastic. Not only at the game but about the game. If
someone doesn't feel the same way as do I I hope they don't attempt
to stifle the enthusiasm. I am extremely proud of you Bill. You
came in saw a problem and spoke out. Then when people faced
you with opposition you took it as a stable individual. It takes guts
to speak your mind but it takes even more to accept criticism.
Boy does that sting
Christine Deadman.
These larvae pupate in warm places that
produce an extreme amount of motion. ..such
as a clothes dryer. Often it takes several times
in the dryer for this pupation to occur but it
will undoubtedly eventually happen to every
pair of socks.
Further studies are being pursued to see the
effects of wearing the left sock on the right
foot and if that will actually prolong the
pupation. But for those of you who don't
know the difference between your left and right
sock don't think it's going to change
anything! First off it's still only a theory and
second it may only prolong pupation not
eliminate it!

Devotional

"but he said to me "My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in
weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses that the power of Christ may rest
upon me "(II Corinthians 12:9).
We human beings are a very proud group. We like to do things for ourselves. Some of us
eventually accept the fact that we can not save ourselves from sin and we turn to Jesus the only
one who can save us.
Then after we do that we find ourselves wanting to please Him which is good but before
we know it we find ourselves taking the whole task of serving Him upon ourselves.
We don't do this for very long before we find ourselves totally defeated. We look at ourselves
and find that we have come up so short of what we believe God wants for us. Then we get
discouraged and feel totally worthless.
And all we wanted to do was follow God. The problem is we can't follow Him if we have
got our eyes on ourselves and we try to live by our own power.
Our own power will never be sufficient for us. We must rely on God's power which is
sufficient.
It doesn't take long to figure out that we can't be perfect in our actions all the time. It is
when we do figure this out that we must rely on God's grace to make up the difference between
his standards and our success in reaching them.
God loves us. That is enough reason for Him to forgive us through His Son's sacrafice for
us. If we keep looking to Him we will always be pleasing and useful to Him. He promised that
His grace would be enough to make us acceptable.
If we stop trying to live by the rules by ourselves and go to Him for help He will be
faithful to forgive accept and use us always.
