New health awareness team formed
In the news this week...

Yellow Jacket Staff Writer
Secretary of State Madeline Albright said early
this week that time was running out for a diplomatic
solution to the standoff with Iraq but that a military
strike by the U.S. was still a few weeks away. This
could be good news for those involved with the Win-
ter Olympic Games scheduled to end on the 22nd of
this month in Japan. Olympic officials had been urg-
ing the White House to hold off until then. Albright is
still drumming up support saying we have Britain and
Germany even if Saudi Arabia has turned down our
country's request to use their air bases to launch strikes.
New polls out last week by the Media Studies
Center in New York show that our President's approval
rating is up-estimated as high as 80. The other sur-
prising news? His highest supporters seem to be
women who love his child-care programs and im-
proved education policies. Those polled described his
sex scandal ordeals as "excessively touted by the me-
dia" and even "biased."
After decades of tension between Peru and Ec-
uador officials in those countries said this week they
could be looking at signing a peace treaty as early as
April. Their dispute? It involves access to the Ama-
zon Basin and the establishment of a fixed border.
The "Cattlemen versus Oprah" trial entered its
fourth week this week with witnesses still on the stand
for the cattlemen who claim Ms. Winfrey's April 1 996
show defamed beef. They're seeking more than $10.3
million in damages. Ms. Winfrey testified herself for
three days and has managed to fight her way through
the lines of fans outside the Amarillo courthouse to
attend the trial every day as well.
Reporters continued to stand around the Hunts-
ville prison this week as Steven Renfro was sched-
uled to die. This man asked no appeals be issued.
This is in direct contrast to the now infamous Karla
Faye Tucker who became the first woman executed
in Texas since the Civil War last week. The Tucker
execution drew an estimated 1200 singing praying
or cheering spectators.

A new team is being
formed here at Howard Payne
University. The team consists
of Becky Lonergan Bret
Pinyerd and Clint Bingham and
is lead by Dynette Boscamp who
is with HPU's Student Health
Services. They are the Jacket
H.E.A.T. team which stands for
Health Education and Aware-
ness Team.
H.E.A.T. offers presenta-
tions and events by request in
dormitories Greek housing and
classrooms. Presentation topics
include: STD'S HIV Contra-
ception Stress Relievers Nutri-
tion and Fitness. The programs
focus on group activity and en-
courage interaction and partici-
pation. H.E.A.T. member Becky
Lonergan said "This is a great
time to learn about things be
cause we are away from home.
We need to know how to take
care of our bodies. If we
(H.E.A.T.) place useful infor-
mation into the students hands
we can show what is and what
is not good for our bodies."
Each one of the members
are meeting together to arrange
a health fair that will take place
on April 7. They will have
blood pressure checks blood
sugar checks and pulse checks
among other vital inspections.
Having different nurses
and other persons in the medi-
cal professions come in and help
out at the Health Fair is good
practice for team members.
"We don't have a health
program here at HPU so it is
good that this is being intro-
duced" said Lonergan.
"We hope to cover nutri-
tion alcohol awareness smok-
ing drugs and gender based is
sues on self care" Boscamp
said. "We will also cover
everday care such as colds and
stress management."
They want to try to meet
everyone's needs. The
H.E.A.T. team is always open
for suggestions so if anyone
has any questions or com-
ments email Becky Lonergan
H4584.
Lonergan is also the per-
son to get in touch with if any-
one would like H.E.A.T. to do
a presentation at any time.
This team is a volunteer
based team and contributes a
lot of their time to making this
a memorable organization for
Howard Payne.
Still to come is a BLOOD
DRIVE which will be held on
April 30.
More information about
this BLOOD DRIVE to follow
at a later time.
