Recent Opinion
letters show interest
in Ethics CORE class
It is exciting and gratify-
ing to sec social ethics as a
centerpiece of the editorial
policy of the McMurry War
Whoop. It is especially
good to see that the Ethics
Core class has indeed en-
gendered thoughtful con-
sideration of important is-
sues beyond the confines of
the classroom.
Having read David
Shaver's editorial on abor-
tion and "personhood" and
the letter to the editor that
followed a clarification
must be made. Both the
editorial and the letter im-
ply that the specific charac-
teristics of personhood men-
tioned in the class (and text-
book) such as memory
and self-consciousness
are somehow the officially
endorsed view by which all
students are judged. On the
contrary this list includes
several widely-held ways
that personhood has been
defined particularly in re-
cent social ethics. The start-
ing point for understanding
personhood is that a "per
UtTlAl
tn jmtui
son" in the moral sense is
someone due respect as a
person and who has moral
rights. Both Dr. Stamey's
text and the class discussions
intend to challenge each stu-
dent to embrace a view of
moral personhood that fits
into her or his own personal
ethics. In fact one of the
ways we have issued this
challenge is to explicitly ask
students how the list should
be modified or expanded so
that a human fetus would
constitute a "person" in the
moral sense. This in fact is
what David Shaver did
when in a later editorial on
abortion and capital punish-
ment he described
personhood in terms of hav-
ing a soul.
We hope that this series of
editorials and responses
from readers indicates that
thoughtful and careful ethi-
cal analysis can become a
hallmark of the McMurry
community.

spring very busy Sit
back & Chill
by T.D.
All in all everyone here
at McMurry must agree
that this spring has indeed
been a busy one. I don't
know about anyone else
but I feel completely worn
out.
With school work
pledging my job and
about a million other
things I'm surprised I'm
still sane. But now that
pledging is done there
seems to be barely the
key word is "barely"
enough time to get every-
thing else done
I'm here to tell you
though to sit back and
chill. I know it seems like
there are thousands of
little things that you must
catch up on things if you
joined a club that pledg-
ing may or may not have
left you time to do.
But don't forget while
you're catching up on all
those other things don't
forget about you!
I know it seems like
there is no time for your-
self and the things that
you want to do but I'm

here to say: Make time.
You can't do anything if
you're completely
drained.
So while you're think-
ing of all those little things
you need to do for club
class or work don't for-
get about yourself. While
everything else in going
on I'm sure that you even
forgot that there were
things that you liked and
that you wanted to do.
Well here's the time to
revisit them.
Even if it's just an hour
a day doing absolutely
nothing take that hour for
yourself and remember
sleeping does not count as
doing something for your-
self. If you're tired
enough your body will
take its rest whether you
want to or not.
So go! Don't put off
something for yourself
and don't put off making
yourself feel good. Re-
member if you don't pam-
per yourself nobody else
will.
