Dress funds schools in India
The iconic black Givenchy gown made
specifically for Audrey Hepburn's starring
role in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1961 will
help pay for new schools in India.
The designer, Hubert de Givenchy,
donated the gown to a charity called
City of Joy Aid based in Calcutta that
then put it up for auction at Christie's in
December. It was then sold to an
anonymous bidder for $ 916,461.
The first of 15 schools complete with
modern teaching aids and computers
opened recently in Laxmikantapur, India.

Army secretary resigns
Secretary of the Army Francis Harvey
announced his resignation on March 2 in
the wake of the Walter Reed Army Medi-
cal Center scandal.
The hospital's substandard
conditions have recently come under pub-
lic scrutiny. The building that is meant to
house wounded soldiers from Iraq was
found to be deteriorating.
The Army released a statement
contributing its ignorance of the conditions
to a lack of leadership. Undersecretary of
the Army, Peter Geren will temporarily
take over Harvey's position on March 9.

areas of Georgia, Alabama and Missouri

Bill to end TAKS testing
Legislation was recently filed in
effort to address growing concerns
among educators who complain that
the high-stakes Texas Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) leads to poor
educational practices.
The bill proposes that the TAKS test be
replaced by 12 end-of-course exams that
would cover four core subject areas. The
bill states that the test will contribute 15
percent to the student's overall grade and
a score of 70 or better must be achieved in
order to graduate.
Due to the time required to
develop new tests and change the testing
philosophy, changes cannot be expected
until the 2009-2010 academic year.

City Council supports
preventative legislation
San Antonio City Council
recently backed state legislation that will
prevent the police force and fire
department pensions from running out
of money.
San Antonio has also taken steps to
ensure the vitality of the health care
programs locally. Without preventative
measures the funds are expected to disap-
pear by 2027.
The compromise bill was conceptual-
ized by the city, the San Antonio Police
Officers Association and the San Antonio
Professional Firefighters Association.
