-Fairy Tale Ending
Owls Slip By Mustangs As Clock Strikes 0:00
by Jonah Rodriguez
Owl Staff
The showdown between the
Odem Owls and the Ingleside
Mustangs was one nobody will
ever forget. Odem scored with no
time left on the clock to defeat
Ingleside, 19-18, in a crucial battle
that continued the unpredictable
drama that is unfolding in District
30-3A this year.
Ingleside's David Lyons opened
the scoring allowing the Mustangs
to take a 6-0 lead just five seconds
into the second period.
The Owls stormed back to take a
7-6 lead when Higinio Flores
connected with Armando Huerta
for a 73-yard scoring pass. Robby
Burden kicked the extra point with
5:11 left in the first half.
On the defensive side of the ball,
the Owls were once again stingy
as they allowed 133 yards on the
ground, forcing the Mustangs to
take to the air. Travis Perez and
Javier Garcia each had a
quarterback sack as the defensive
line applied strong pressure the
entire night.
Just before the half, Flores once
again hit Steve Emerson with a 12-
yard pass, giving Odem a 13-6
halftime advantage.
Upon entering the second half,
the Mustangs came back with a 1-
yard touchdown run late in the
third quarter. This closed the gap
and left Odem with a 13-12 lead
going into the final and decisive
quarter.
Scoring once more, David Lyons
allowed the Mustangs to take the
lead over the Owls 18-13 with
1:03 left to play.
The Owls drove the ball nearly
60 yards in less than a minute.
As time ran out, the frustrated
Mustangs committed pass
interference in the end zone and
were penalized.
On the final play, with no time
remaining, Armando Huerta ran
two yards for an Odem Owl
touchdown.
Higinio Flores racked up a total
of 169 yards passing with 10
completions. Joe Orozco rushed
for 33 yards and 30 yards
receiving.
Friday night the Owls will travel
to Aransas Pass to take on a
Panther team fresh off 46-26 win
over Mathis. The Panthers post a
2-3 district record with the other
win snatched from a powerful
West Oso team. Odem is in a
three-way tie for third place with
West Oso, and Ingleside behind
leaders Goliad and Sinton. But
don't count the Owls out of the
play-offs just yet. This Friday
night's match-ups have the
potential to shake things up as
Ingleside travels to Sinton and
West Oso journeys to Goliad.
Only time will tell.

IN THE NICK OF TIME...
Armando Flores gets this pass off just in time as an Ingleside defender lunges for him. The Owls played
a tough game against the Mustangs last Friday night, and came up victorious in the very end, 19-18.
