THE PADUCAH POST
Skimping On Milk
Not Economy
To skimp on milk in or-
der to cut family food costs
is poor economy, says Miss
Louise Mason, Extension
foods and nutrition special-
ist at Texas A&M Univer-
sity.
Without enough milk you
can hardly provide meals
that meet the family’s cal-
cium needs. Milk is also a
good buy for high-quality
protein, the B-vitamins, rib-
oflavin and other vitamins
and minerals necessary for
healthy growth.
Money can be saved on
milk purchases. Miss Mason
suggests possible ways to
save in buying fresh, whole
milk:
(1) Compare prices. Milk
of the same quality from
different companies some-
times varies in price. (2)
Check to see if milk com-
panies in your area offer
discounts on large home
deliveries. Check also on
cash-and-carry versus home
delivery prices. By carrying
milk from the store you
may save 1 to 3 cents a
quart. (3) Price large con-
tainers. In some places milk
sels for less in 2-quart and
gallon containers than by
the quart or pint.
Watch for specials on
canned evaporated milk.
Evaporated milk has nutri-
tive values similar to fresh
whole milk and often may
be used the same way —
an infant feeding and cook-
ing, for example. Other less
expensive products are skim
milk, buttermilk, and non-
fat dry milk. These are
lower in calories and in
vitamin A than whole milk
but are high in protein,
minerals, and riboflavin.
Non-fat dry milk is the
best bargain for calcium and
convenience in cooking. It
can also be stored on the
shelf until needed. Use
milk in cooking and include
ice cream,, cheese and oth-
er milk products in the fam-
ily’s meals.
Remove discoloration left
by a drippy faucet by ap-
plying a paste of cream of
tarter aiVl peroxide, say
housing and home furnish-
ings specialist of the Texas
A&M University Extension
Service.
