Storm Stirred by
Student Newspaper
LUBBOCK. Tw*. May lO-tiff)-*
The Toreador. Texas Tech semi-
weekly student newspaper, in a front
page editorial yesterday virtually
demanded the removal \ of Head
Coach Pete Cawthon.
The paper charged Cawthon with
direct responsibility for Tech * oust-
er from the Border conference at
the league session in Tucson. Atria.,
last week-end. The Lubbock school
was expelled for “continued infrac-
tions of conference rules,'' including
charges of using two ineligible men
in the Cotton Bowl game at Dallas
Jan. 3. against St. Mary's of Cali-
fornia.
Football player* stormed the 8Ul-
denl newspaper offices to prevent
publication, but copies were smug-
gled out and circulated on the cam-
pus.
The paper expressed fear for the
.schools football reputation and
that the coach's "action" might in-
jure the school academically. ]
