THE STATUS OF THE WAR.
In the beginning an inextricable tangle of hostile forces,
affecting in some manner the whole of organized society;
soon a local cleavage shocking Europe and European in-
terests; and now, finally, a universal shake-up involving
vitally every great nation and nearly every small nation of
the earth. In 'the beginning a stir of discontent in the
more or less democratic European nations of a constant
and growing German menace; soon a definite and heroic
protest; and now, finally, a universal call to arms of de-
mocracy against despotism. Thus has been the nature of
the development and thus the effects of the great war;
thus it has reached, we believe, a near climax. Slowly but
surely some portentious events are emerging from the ob-
scurity that must of necessity attend so gigantic a struggle.
"HE HATH PUT DOWN THE MIGHTY."
In the daybreak of what seems to be a new age, silhou-
etted against the dark background of the war, the fact
stands out in bold relief that the world must be free of
masters. Already one, maddened by the gods, has been
destroyed. Others are maddened. Moreover, all the stolid,
indifferent masses, unnecessary in times of peace, their
slow wits quickened by the unusual circumstances of war
and made conscious of the double menace of the battle-
front before and starvation and servitude behind them,
and, in their new consciousness, aware of no reward for
