Student Council Officers for ’72-73 Elected
Recently, the students of
Weatherford High School elec-
ted a new slate of student
council officers for the up-
coming school year of 1972-
73. Dean Harrison was elec-
ted president, Andrea Worden-
vice president, Kathy Curtis-
secretary, and Jackie Welch
was chosen as treasurer. Be-
cause communication between
students and student govern-
ment has become so vitally
important to the success of
any school, the Grass Bt|p
interviewed each new officer
in the hope of better acquaint-
ing the student body with them
and encouraging students to
take an active part in their
own government.
Dean Harrison, future presi-
dent, stated, “the most im-
portant function or respon-
sibility of my office is to see
that all opinions get an equal
chance of representation be-
fore the student body and
achool as well as advisors
and teachers. I fe«J that stu-
dent government is a great as-
set to both students and fac-
ulty if it is exercised in the
proper manner. In my opinion,
there are many things lacking
in the present student council.
My main goal for next year
is to see that the student
body is truly heard and not
just seen as it has been in
previous years. I would
also like to bring the faculty
and student body closer
together and bridge the com-
munication gap. I think that
students would take more
interest in school affairs if
they thought that their ideas
would be heard farther than
the student council officers
themselves. By openly
voicing the student’s opinion,
I feel that this problem will
be remedied.’’
Andrea Worden expressed
her feelings about her new
position as vice-president
in this way, “The main
responsibility of my office
is to be in charge of assem-
blies. I also feel that a major
responsibility of mine is to
the students and teachers of
this school. As their repre—
, sentative I think that I should
do everything I can to see
that they have a voice in what
goes on in school. My opinion
of student government as it is
right now is not very high.
I think that too many people
look at being an officer on
Student CoOncil more as a
title than as a responsibil-
ity. ’ Speaking on improving
the Student Council Andrea
stated, “The only way student
government can be improved
is to get rid of the apathy here
at WHS and replace it with a
sense of caring about what is
happening to our school. I
feel that the first step towards
rney are going to just sit and
complain without making a
move to do something, then
I really don’t feel they de-
serve to have anything done
anyway.”
Newly elected treasurer,
Jackie Welch, has the res-
ponsibility of keeping track
of the financial status of the
organization. She feels that,
“Student governing, if used
wisely, can contribute much
council is a farce and nothing
ever gets done. This attitude
is causing the most trouble.
If more students would be-
come more interested in stu
dent council there could be
interesting activities to re-~
lieve the boredom. There
were students elected to re-
present organizations who
have attended one or two
meetings out of the whole
getting rid of apathy is to try
and build a better relationship
between students and faculty.
Another thing would be to make
students feel that whatever
they are doing for their school
is worth doing.” In summary
she said, “| want people
to realize that Student Council
is there for their use and if
they want to be heard, they
should talk to anyone having
anything to do with’ it, but if
to the student body . Most
students aren’t as resentful
toward other student’s ideas
as they would be toward a
faculty member’s ideas. The
only way to improve student
government at WHS is to get
more students to realize that,
they can have a voice in
what goes on in our school.
I believe that we can achieve
most of what we want if we
are willing to work. Students
seem to think, that the student
r v
year . Consider who you are
electing as representatives.
Elect students who are
^capable and much more will
be achieved. ’ ’
Kathy Curtis, who was
elected^ as secretary, states
that “my responsibilities
would be to record the
minutes of every meeting as
well as keep a record of all
who are present and absent
at the meetings. I would
also be available to do any
work outside of the meetings
and work together with the
other officers in any way.”
Kathy expressed her idea
of an effective student govern-1
ment in this way, “I believe
the student council should be
an avenue for communication
between faculty and students.
So often the students feel
the faculty doesn’t have an
interest in them or the activi-
ties the school has or would
like to have. We more or less
go our separate ways, not'
taking the time to talk and
to listen to one another. This
is one way student council
can be of help, Also the
student council should inform
the students of everything
that happens or is going to
happen in school . I believe
student government can be im-
proved by making the elec-
tions for the student council
representatives something to
look forward to. Try to elect
the most qualified and those
who want to serve. In the
past, the e lections haven’t
been taken seriously enough
or any thought given to them.”
As a remedy to apathy,
Kathy thinks, “having assem-
blies would remedy the apa-
thy at WHS because the stu-
dent body is together and it
creates a feeling of unity.
I think too, that exercising
discipline would help a lot.”
As a closing to this article,
we would like to print a
statement made by Dean
Harrison to the student body:
I don’t know whether I was
elected to this position be-
cause you felt I was caDable
or because I was the only can-
didate. Either way, I am hon-
ored and want to
thank you. f want to be the
type of President who can be
on the same level with all my
classmates and I hope that
you will feel free to express
your opinions to me so that I
can convey them to the entire
student body and faculty. I
will do all in my power to see
that every individual is equally
represented. I believe that
every student will notice a
change toward more represen-
tation of the student body next
year.
