BROWN
From page 1
when his term ends Dec. 31. There are no Democratic
challengers. The primary elections are March 1.
The father of 6-month-old twins - a boy and a
girl - Brown was born at Palo Pinto General
Hospital on Christmas Day 1982, the son of long-
time local teacher Debbie Marsden Brown and
Tommy Brown, a retired firefighter living at
Possum Kingdom.
Zinn Brown noted he recently learned he has a
great-grandfather who is one of this area's first
school teachers, with certification dating back to the
1880s.
"I have a long history in Palo Pinto County and I
want to continue that with my family/' Brown said.
He graduated from Mineral Wells High School in
2001, then attended Weatherford College before
enrolling at Texas Tech University beginning in
2002, where he claims a Bachelor of Business
Administration degree in Finance and Marketing,
graduating with honors.
Initially thinking he would follow a career in
finance and investments, it was when he began
pondering a master's degree that it was suggested
he consider a jurisprudence degree. The thought of
becoming an attorney intrigued him, he said.
Growing up, he said, "I could argue with a wall."
He obtained his law degree in 2009 from the South
Texas College of Law, where he was involved in sev-
eral organizations. During his law studies, he
worked as a case analyst for the Houston Police
Department's crime lab review panel, independently
investigating claims of innocence based on tested
evidence, allowing researching case law and serving
as a case auditor.
After receiving his law degree, he went to work
for a Fort Worth law firm before founding a firm
with two partners in Houston, serving as the man-
aging attorney.
Four years later he returned to Mineral Wells. "I
enjoy being here," he said.
He said has been involved locally with organiza-
tions and activities, including serving on the
Downtown Redevelopment Steering Committee,
going through the Mineral Wells Area Chamber of
Commerce's Leadership Class 20, serving as a
chamber ambassador, completing the Mineral Wells
Police Department's Citizen's Police Academy,
involvement with the Children's Alliance Center of
Palo Pinto County and is a member of and treasurer
for the Palo Pinto County Bar Association.
"I love being involved in the community as much
as I can be," said Brown.
His local practice has focused on criminal defense
and family law. He serves in rotation as an indigent
criminal defense attorney in the 29th State District
Court and as an ad litem in child custody cases.
He said arguing cases before a judge and jury is
his passion.
"When I became a lawyer I wanted to be in the
courtroom," he said.
As far as looking to move from criminal defense
to the prosecuting attorney, Brown said being a
defense attorney is not always about trying to win
an acquittal for a client.
"It's not my job to get somebody off," he said. "It
is my job to make sure others do their job."
He said his experience on the HPD's innocence
project, as a criminal defense attorney and in CPS
and family law cases will make him a good state's
advocate as a prosecutor of misdemeanor crimes
tried in the county court. The county attorney also
advises the county on legal matters.
While he said he will not give up entirely his private
law practice, Brown said if elected, he will make being
county attorney his main priority.
"I know there is a lot that goes into being a county
attorney," he said. "It is almost a full-time job. I want
to make sure (I do the job) correctly."
He said he has been to the county attorney's
office and discussed processes to get a feel for how
the office is managed under Garrett.
"Phil has done a great job," said Brown. "He took
it over when was 29, I'm 32.1 have the time now.
I would like to put my stamp on it. He is a great
attorney. He has his way of doing things and I have
my way of doing things. I am going to take it one step
at a time."
Brown said he does not see serving as county
attorney as just a four-year commitment.
"I am not just in it for one term," he said. "I want to
get in there and provide the community with the best
service I can."
