THE JEWISH HERALD-VOICE
I am by profession a Christian minister.
Were U not for the dangers that have
Stretched out like so many tentacles from
fiermany, threatening to encircle and de-
stroy the world, I should still be preach-
ng the Gospel from a pulpit in Kansas
"ity, Missouri. But when I came back
rom Germany in 1935 I brought a!-ng a
horrible vision of things to come. I had
seen displayed before me the system of
transmission through which Nazi doctrines
were being sent to certatin individuals in
the United States. And I knew that these
individuals were being prepared and were
preparing themselves to install here the
oppressions and the barbarism that reigned
in Berlin
In ranging the forces that must take on
these destructive elements, I became so
busy with the work that I had to leave the
pulpit. Perhaps I have carried with me a
peed to preach. But the need to preach to
the )ews has grown in me during the
lew years that ! have been trying to line
Up the forces of courage and of integrity.
The Jews have both, and they have
also the instinctive resistance that has
brought them through so much tragedy
and enabled them to survive all their
enemies. Yet I cannot help but register
my impression that superimposed on these
qualities there is another quality which
marks, in particular, the American Jews
with whom I have come into contact.
They shared it, I believe, with German
Jews.
1 have been told by many visitors to
Germany during the years just after 1933
that many of the Jews in the country be-
lieved the best way to overcome Hitler
was to shush-shush the news of his ex-
istence. They didn’t want the world to
know what was going on; to talk about
it, they said, would only intensify the
trouble.

A Christian Warning To Jews
By L. M. BIRKHEAD
In the past six years L. M. Birkhead. formerly Unitarian Minister in
City, has achieved a nation-wide reputation for his active leadership in the
discovery and exposure of anti-democratic forces in America. From the day
he came back from Germany in 1935 to warn America af the dangers of Hitler-
ism to his latest achievement in the issuance of a pamphlet, “Ford Must Choose,”
by the Friends of Democracy which he heads, Dr. Birkhead has been a militant,
unequivecating enemy of hypocrisy toward Jews. — The Editor.
Unfortunately, I must admit that this at-
titude exists here. I must call it fear. It
has nothing to do with courage, which
the Jews have in plenty. The fear is of
a superficial kind; it has to do with their
behavior in advance. If they ever had to
face the trouble, they would do it with
the genius they have always shown. But
they persist in believing that for the time
being silence is sometimes better than
candor.
I have met peculiar instances among
Jewish leaders, who have not been entirely
in accord with certain publications under-
taken by the Friends of Democracy, of
which I am the director. It is the shush-
shush doctrine all over again. Keep quiet
about it, and it will die down of its own
accord. It won’t, any more than appease-
ment of all kinds conquered Hitler.
We have in this country a number of
subversive organizations which have ob-
tained the support of misguided indi-
viduals. Some of these people may be
out for their own benefit, some of them
may really have pathological concepts
about Jews and democratic ideals. Our
time has made the Jews more patently con-
nected with the struggles of democracy as
a whole than they have ever been, to the
outside world. To the Jews, democracy
was always important, since with the
coming of democracy came emancipation.
Now, however, the Jews are bound with
democracy for the sake of the rest of us.
We, too, know that whoever attacks the
Jews attacks us, because he undermines
the strength of democratic principles. ^
The Dominance of Fear
It is therefore particularly disheartening
to see this superficial fear implanted on
the inherited courage and grandeui' of the
Jewish people. I cannot believe that it is
a weakness which exists only in the lead-
ers. If I could believe that, I would have
to say that some Jewish leaders are betray-
ing their own people. I would much
rather say that these leaders, mistaken as
they are, are responding to the temper of
the people at large. The leaders are
afraid because somehow tne bulk of the
Jewish population in this country has not
yet learned to ally itself with its own fate,
on the basis that this fate is the fate of all
of us.
Perhaps it is because too many Jews
have mistaken the meaning of emancipa-

London — One hundred and
twenty officers and their men,
mostly Australians, visited Dag-
ania and had a “roaring good
time." according to a report that
has reached here. The Military
sent a special field kitchen and
Dagania presented the foodstuffs
for a Supper relished by the col-
olists and their guests.
The Australians, who have had
considerable agricultural exper-
ience, felt quite gt home at the
Jewish oommunal settlement
where they indulged for hours in
a discussion of crops, prices and
agricultural methods. The con-
versation was conducted in a jar-
gon of English, Hebrew and some
Arabic. When words failed, ges-
tures filled the gap. Six Austral-
ians, entering a cow-milking con-
test milked six cows each and
happily remarked: “It’s great to
do this again after nine months."
As is customary in Palestinian
settlements, the evening ended
with the traditional Hora dance,
the officers and soldiers equalling
in gusto the Dagania settlers.

HITLER’S NEW WAR BRINGS
INDIA TO BRITAIN’S SIDE
London — Hitler’s attack on
Russia apparently is causing
many Indians who formerly found
themselves at variance with Brit,
ish policy to forsake the path of
non-Cooperation in the Empire ‘
war effort for that of active help,
according to well-informed sour-
ces in London.
The Fuehrer’s new war on the
Soviet is shaking the faith of
many of Mahatma Gandhi's fol-
lowers in the Congress movement,
it is noted here. Many of them
notably the powerful Pandit Ne-
hru, have long been Soviet sym-
pathizers—but now that Russia
is fighting for her life,- Indians
are ceasing to see the war as “a
struggle between rival capitalist
imperialisms.”
There are already the strongest
portents that this is s<k according
to reports from India. Dr. Satya
Pal, close friend of Gandhi and
Nehru, has resigned from the
Congress Party. He formerly was
president of the Punjab provinces
Congress committee and Punjab
Legislative Assembly Member.
To the Press, Dr. Pal said:
“What harm can accrue from our
helping the British win the war
to save us from the evil fate of
foreign invasion?” And his resig-
nation followed that of Munshi,
once Home Minister of the Con-
gress Government in Bombay.
That is why in informed quart-
ers in Britain it is believed that
Congress’ instant rejection of Sec-
retary for India Amery’s White
Paper, providing for new Indian
appointees to the Viceregal Ex-
ecutive Council, should not be
treated with too great significance.
Three of the new members—N. S.
Aney, N. R. Sarkar and Raghav-
endra Rao—have all been closely
associated with Congress activi-
ties.
The White Paper, which was
presented to Parliament last
month, has been described in an
informed quarter .in London as
“a bold departure from tradition
which will provide fresh energy
for India's war effort”
Jrusalem — Jewish settlement
in the Huleh region has been
strengthened by the establish-
ment of the sixth new settlement
in North Hulsh, it is reported
here.
Building will be begun shortly
when women and children join
the present settlers. The site is
on Duwarra land acquired within
recent years. This area has 1500
dunams of irrigable land, the first
two of which have been cultivated
with favorable results.

tion. Emancipation means, in its essence,
the right to be what one is; the right to
claim one’s heritage, to proclaim it and to
add it proudly to the cauldron of demo-
cratic fashion. If one hangs back, if one
tries to deny a heritage because here and
there a fool or a blackguard scoffs at it,
then one is keeping from the cauldron of
democratic fusion part of the wealth on
which its continued existence depends.
None of us has anything to be afraid
of, neither as individuals nor as repres-
entatives of a creed, as far as ultimate
victory of human liberty is concerned.
None of us has the right to believe that
denial of a creed, or of a culture, is a pre-
requisite for democracy. On the contrary,
denial of a culture destroys democracy
as thoroughly as attack on a culture de-
stroys it.
The Jews have brought to the creation
of this country as great a contribution of
enterprise, of imaginativeness, of the pion-
eering spirit and of gratitude for the priv-
ileges a democracy bring as any other
group of people living within our bound-
aries. The Jews must, to continue this
contribution of enterprise, retain every
atom of the courage which sent them
westward to the new land. Now it means
protecting the democracy they helped
build. They can protect it best by point-
ing out every violation of democracy they
see. If the violation is aimed, for the
moment, at the Jews alone, it is no less
aimed at the rest of us. By failing to see
this, and to shout k out so, that all the
world may hear, Jews are harming not
only themselves, but the rest of us.
I therefore say: Jews! Stop Being Afraid!
He who strikes at you strikes at all of us.
Do not deny-the existence of the enemy,
do not try to turn the other cheek, for
it is not your cheek the enemy is after,
but your heart and the hearts of all of us.
