Gnat Books Lock
Homs With Locke
An enthusiastic Great Books
Group met at the Center last
Thursday to discuss Locke’s
“Of Civil Government,” with
Muriel Barlin and Lorraine Os
terweil as Discussion Leaders.
The Group discussed at some
length the basis of Locke’s the-
ory of the State of Nature.
“Men living together according
to reason, without a common
superior on earth with authori-
ty to judge them, is properly
the state of nature.” “In the
state of nature every one has
the executive power of the
law.”
Locke states then, that Gov-
ernment becomes the remedy
“of these evils which necessari-
ly follow them from men’s be-
ing judges in their own cases.”
The Group spent some time
discussing our own society: Is
living in society natural for
man? What are the methods
that society uses to remedy the
defects of the state of nature?
What rights does man have in
the state of nature that he does
not have in our society?
Also taken up were factors
which are involved in the hold-
ing of political power: What is
power? How does political pow
er differ from paternal power,
the power of master over slav-
es, the husband over his wife?
What is the purpose of politi-
cal power? What are its limits?
Are there rights which an in-
dividual cannot give to the
state?
It was noted during the dis-
cussion that the farmers of the
Federation of Independence
must have been familiar with
Locke, since so much of his
theory is embodied in the dec-
laration with arguments at a
high pitch, was brought to a
close at 10 p. m.
The next meeting of the
Great Books Group will take
place at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center on Thursday, Decem-
ber 15th., at 7:55 p. m. Dr. Leo
Horvitx and Lorraine Os ter-
weill will be Leaders for Rou-
sseau’s “The Social Contract”
ACTION ON BUILDING
LOOMS
Albert Meyerson, President
of the Board of Directors of the
Jewish Community Center, has
announced that the Center is
beginning to see its way clear
toward the signing of building
contracts and ground breaking
for the new Jewish Community
Center, possibly before the end
of the year.
The starting of the new Cen-
ter building construction has
been awaiting the payments of
pledges outstanding on the
Building Fund so that suffic-
ient cash reserve might be
held for contractors fees which
would become due as the work
progressed. Financing plans
have materialized and await
the backing which will come by
the payment of outstanding
pledges.
It is therefore urged that all
people in the Houston Jewish
Community who hold balances
due on their pledges to the
Building Fund make their
payment as quickly as pos-
