To The Jewish Herald-Voice
Houston, Texas
Dear Mr. Editor:
Over-simplification of ideas more often than not mars the truth,
or as least results in its distortion, and when such a blemish is about
to be inflicted on Judaism It is time to call a halt
The intention of the author of the first three, articles on “Juda-
ism in Bas^ English" is food, I am sure, though the title is rather
ambiguous. He wanted to expound basic Judaism for the benefit of
those who are either unable or unwilling to inform themselves at
its original source, and he wanted to do It in plain English, under-
standable to all.
But when the universality idea and ideal contained in Judaism
is either misunderstood or ignored to the point of being publicly
treated in the vein of a bed tine story and the style of a nursery
rhyme—Judaism is inflicted a black eye.
p?hen the work of our prophets, which is a source of inspiration
and hope to the civilized world and unexcelled from a poetical point
dt view, is summed up by A Houstonian for the benefit of those
wIm «• not knew, by the following prose which he quotes them as
saying to the Rings: “We can be modern (sic), but our religious
teachings should remain the same as when our people were shep-
herd* or farmers, big cities and big business must follow the same
rule of justice”—he is offending the intelligence of those whom he.,
wants to teach and the historical sense of all his readers. I would
hate to see this childish concept of Judaism and other factual and
historical inexactitudes fall under the eye of an intelligent Gentile
To save space, I must forego all other points out of which A. Hous-
tonian is building his background for his new type of Judaism—
“American Judaism.”
But I cannot help but tell A. Houstonan a little incident told by
the Talmud. A Gentile came to the great Hillel about 100 B. C. with
the request to teach him the whole Torah—Judaism—while he was
standing on one foot. And Hillel acceded to his request with the
following answer which in Hebrew comprises three words: Love thy
neighbor as thyself. This is the goal, all other commandments are
just the way leading toward that goal.
Sere, in three words of basic Hebrew—or was it in basic Greek?
—the great Hillel gave us a complete, an all-comprising definition of
Judaism. Does it satisfy A Houstonian?
Sincerely yours,
J. Avigael.
virtually impossible” for the 969
“token” refugees at the Fort On- •
tario refugee sheltr “to return to
Europe at present,” they should
be permitted to remain in the
United States “pending a deter-
mination o(^ their future status,”
the New York Herald-Tribune
declares in an editorial. Such a
program “would seem to be not
only the just and humanitarian,
but the practical course,” the
Herald-Tribune says.
Warns Against U. S. “Damping”
of Ref a gees
A warning that if one country
“dumps” the refugees and war
exiles it has been ghetlering “it
will stimulate a similar and d*h-
gerous attitude on the part of all
countries who permitted refugees
to enter,” was voiced by Dr. Max
Gottschalk, director of the'Am-
erican Jewish Committee's In-
stitute on Peace and Post-War
Problems. Dr* Gottschalk is leav-
ing for a six month survey of
refugee problems abroad.

ALABAMA DBYS SCORE
JEWS, GREEKS, ITALIANS
New York (JPS)—A list of
Jews, Greeks and Italians who
have liquor licenses in Birming-
ham, Alabama, has been printed
by the Alabama Temperance Al-
liance with the comment that
“the iniquitous business in which
these foreign elements so con-
genially engage is not excused by
the fact that some of those hold-
ing licenses were born in Ameri-
ca, or that some of them have
sons in the armed forces,” the
magazine Nation, liberal weekly,
reports here.

SPELLMAN TELLS OF
PRIESTS RESCUE OF JEWS
New York (JPS—In order that
the Jewish refugees be sheltered
from the Germans on the Day of
Atonement, should not go hun-
gry after their fast, an old priest
in a small Belgian town spent
the entire day collecting food for
them. Archbishop Francis J.
Spellman, who recently returned
from a tour of Europe, reports ip
an article in Collier’s Magazine.
The priest sheltered a dozen Jew-
ish children for four years. "He
provided for them out of his own
resources. On his calendar he
marked their Sabbath and Holy
Days,” When the town was lib-
erated, he arranged for their a-
doption by Jewish families. Arch-
bishop Spellman writes. *
New York (JPS) — American
Jewish Conference proposals for
facilitating relief work in behalf
of Jews found in Germany, by
attaching Jewish liaison officers
to the headquarters and field
teams of UNRRA and to the Dis-
placed Persons Section of the
Civil Affairs Division of AMG,
are now being weighed by tbe
State Department, War Depart-
UNRRA and the Intergov-
ernmental Committee on Refu-
gees. American Jewish Confer-
ence representatives negotiated
with officials of all these depart-
ments. Six Jewish Congressmen,
acquainted with the facts, have
communicated with the military
authorities in Germany, in sup-
port of these proposals.
While material relief is now
being rendered by Jewish relief
organizations, the problem of re-
patriation and resettlement re-
mains to be solved, the American
Jewish Conference points out.
Furthermore, the social, religious
and cultural needs of the libera-
ted Jews have been utterly neg-
lected, there being no one with
an understanding of their tradi-
mqnth to work out a program of
action in connection with the pre-
sentation of Jewish demands to
several international gatherings
to take place in London within
the next few months, including
the third meeting of the Council
of UNRRA August 7th.

POLISH JEWISH TO BE AIDED
IN FINDING EMPLOYMENT
Washington (JPS)—A plan to
aid Polish Jews by establishing a
commission to investigate em-
ployment possibilities was iniat-
ed by the Central Committee of
Polish Jews, the Lublin radio
said in a broadcast reported to-
day by the Federal Communica-
tions Commission.
Members of the committee’s la-
bor and production section, meet-
ing in Warsaw, agreed to subsi-
dize a “commission to investi-
gate the various channels for
finding employment for Jews and
to undertake large-scale propa-
ganda along these lines,” declar-
ed the Yiddish-language broad-
cast
tional backgrounds and a know-
ledge of their language to act as
intermediary between them and
the military and other authori-
ties.
Although the military authori-
ties are eager to assist the Jews
in Germany, the absence of inti-
mate knowledge of Jewish life
in Europe on the part of their
personnel has led to a deteriora-
tion of the position of displaced
Jews in Germany.
No man is quite sane. Each has
a vein of folly in his composition
—a slight determination of blood
to the head, to make snse of
holdng him hard to one point
which he has taken to heart.—
