THE JEWISH HE1ALD-VOICE
Members Of Swiss Parliament Rap
Government Policy on Hitler Victims
Elect Heller, Wise
And Rosenwald
Geneva (JPS-Palcor)—The pot*
icy towards the victims of Hitler-
ism instituted by Swiss Minister
of the interior, Von Steiger, was
severely criticised and described
as -narrow hearted” by mem-
bers of Parliament in a debate on
the Home Office’s 1944 report
He was alleged to have shown
undue ‘leniency” towards Nazis
still living in Switzerland, in-
cluding Germany’s last Minister
to Switzerland, Koecher. Al-
though the report eras finally
approved, it is believed that the
considerable and vociferous op-
position has seriously shaken
Von Steiger’s position and his
policies with regard to refugees.
Swttaevlaad Ban Dean to Mi-
gee trees German Camps
The Swiss Government is de-
termined not to admit any more
refugees from Germany except
those passing through an route
to France, it was learned here.
The Swiss Government, which
gave sanctuary to thousands of
Hitler victims, contends that
person* liberated from German
concentration camps are no long-
er in danger of their lives and the
principle of sanctuary is there-
fore no longer applicable in their
Communities. The aforemention-
ed organizations have also ob-
tained permission from SEAF to
transfer these people from Ger-
many. The arrival of the first
group of 390 children from Bu-
chen wald and other camps is ex-
pected within the next few days.
This particular group, comprised
mostly of Jewish children, has
some 12 and 16. The Swiss Gov-
ernment gave assurances that
Swiss Jewry will be permitted to
distribute the children into spec-
ial Jewish homes.
Acting, however, on applica-
tion from Jewish and non-Jew-
ish welfare organizations, the
Swiss Government has agreed to
admit for not mors than six
months a maximum of 2J)00
children under twelve, especially
orphans from German concen-
tration camps, and also a limited
number of side adults.
The Government acted on an
appeal from the Swiss Gift Or-
ganization , the Children’s Re-
lief Bureau of the Swiss Red
Cross, the Swiss Sanitary Center
and the Swiss Union of Jewish
Postpone Again Deportation of
Befageos to UNRRA Camp
The removal of rescuees from
Thereslenstadt and Bergenbelsen
to a UNRRA camp in Italy, sched-
uled for June 22, has again been
postponed “indefinitely,” follow-
ing protests here and abroad. The
removal, which the refugees
threatened would be resisted by
force, was to affect those not
holding Palestine immigration
certificates. About 120 Czech na-
tionals among the Thereslenstadt
rescuees, had applied for repa-
triation and will, leave by motor
car, via Germany, for Prague,
within the next few days.
SJMJH Swiss Francs Spent for
Rafngees in 1944
The Relief Union for Jewish
refugees, affiliated with the Un-
ion of Swiss Jewish Communities,
at its annual conference near
Zurich, heard that the sum of
5.390.000 Swiss francs has been
■pent for Jewish refugees in
Switzerland during 1944. Of this
amount the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee
contributed 2,800,000 Swiss francs,
1.275.000 francs had come from the
general Swiss drive toward which
both Jews and non-Jews contrib-
uted, and the remainder was
raised by the Swiss Jewish drive.

Mr. D. H. White
Jewish Herald-Voice
Dear Mr. White:
I read with interest the article written by “Rabbi” Landman.
I say “with interest” because the gentleman in question misquoted.
In the first place, the statement “D’vorim yotzim min halev nechnesu
el halev” (as written by the person mentioned) is not a statement of
the rabbis. It is a “Ma’amor Haam”—the saying of the people—that
took place “M’lachar zman hatalmud,” the period following the
Talmudic area. The exact quotation is “Dvorim Hayotzim min halev
Nichnosim el halev.”
(Please insert the Hebrew print in order that the other learned
men of the city will substantiate my correction.)

I make this correction because I am a Hebraist and when a
“Rabbi” misquotes, I feel that an injustice has been done to the quo-
tation and to Hebrew grammar.
> I would suggest that in the future the “Rabbi” thumb through
the rabbinical books and. make sure he is quoting correctly.
Trusting that the Hebrew language and Hebrew grammar will
not be abused in the future. ,
Sincerely yours,

Nothing constructive in 7W years?
June 29, 1945.
Mr. Dave White, Editor
Jewish Herald-Voice
Dear Mr. White:
Your tune of Ji° huni tweedledum, has the sound of a composer
who can’t take a bit of constructive suggestions. Anyone can see
through your answer to my letter, that you feel hurt and can’t take
it, so you resort. to sarcasm which befits a kindergarten student
Even a correspondent student can see that.
Again I say to you, please find out correctly from the Jewish
Council, if I was notified or even called to that meeting where a so-
called gentlemen agreement was made, and you will be convinced
that my statement was correct.
Mr. White, I do not want people to dance to my tunes, however,
if they do, then I al least studied music and can play a time that
carries a melodious harmony to the human heart, but you and some
of the so called leaders, try to play times without any harmonious
chords. Your times are full of sharps and flats mixed together which
is very unpleasant to the Jewish soul.
Mr. White, I recommend you study a bit the Ethics of The Fath-
ers, especially Chapter HI, Verse XV, also Verse XXI. It will give
you a brighter outlook on life, whereby you will not insult people
publicly.
I do not know where you had your education, but you surely don’t
display a genuine friendship in your Editorials toward your fellow-
men.
Oh yes, I know you don’t like my articles, for they are not writ-
ten by the brilliant minded Editor of The Herald-Voice, but it is
funny that some Judges, Professors and hundreds of intelligent men
and women like it.
in
You know, Mr. Editor, during my seven and a half years
Houston, reading your paper, I can’t for the life of me see anything
you have done for this community. Instead of having a program to
keep harmony and understanding, you always try to disunite the
chain of brotherhood.
I know the Jewish Herald-Voice is your paper, although you
have an advisory committee which ? - and you can write
whatever you please, so go and answer as sarcastically as you please,
insult as much as you waat. This is a democratic country and you
can d<> as you please.
This is my last answer and I do want to remain friends with
you and I do mean you. So let us learn how to smile and how to
take it
For a speedy redemption to Israel and all humanity, I remain,
Sincerely Yours
Max M. Landman, Rabbi
Congregation Adath Emeth.
And for the record: The Jewish Community Connell sent a letter
and a follow-np postal card for the meeting to all names on the
list The writer .of the above letter was included in this mailing,
which summoned all “gentlemen” and ladies to the meeting at which
unanimous agreement was reached regarding publicity. DHW.
