United States And Britain Accept
Horthy’s Offer; Will Provide Rescue
Haven to Hungary’s Victimized Jews
Washington (JPS)—With time running out, the State Depart-
ment announced that the governments of the United States and
Great Britain will provide “temporary” havens to any Jews released
by Hungary in accordance with Regent Horthy’s offer to the Red
Cross to permit the departure to Palestine and overseas of Jewish
children, and the emigration of all Jews to Palestine and neutral
countries.
The governments have officially transmitted their reply to
Horthy through the International Red Cross and have requested
neutral countries to facilitate the
passage of Jews who reach their
borders. At the same time the
State Department announcement
stressed that “in accepting the
offer . . . they (the U. S. and
Britain) do not in any way con-
done the action of the Hungar-
ian Government in forcing emi-
gration of Jews as an alterna-
tive to persecution and death”
The State Department's an-
nouncement reads: “The Interna-
tional Committee of the Red
Cross has communicated to the
Governments of the United King-
. dom and the United States an
offer of the Hungarian Govern-
ment regarding emigration and
treatment of Jews. Because of
the desperate plight of the Jews
in Hungary and the overwhelm-
ing humanitarian considerations
involved, the two Governments
are informing the Government of
Hungary through the Interna-
tional Committee of the Red
Cross that despite the heavy dif-
ficulties and responsibilities in-
volved they have accepted the
offer of the Hungarian Govern-
ment for the release of Jews,
and will make arrangements for
the care of such Jews leaving
Hungary who reach neutral or
United Nations territory, and al-
so that they will find temporary
havens of refuge where such
people may live in sefety.
“Notification of these assur-
ances are being given to the neu-
tral countries, who are being re-
quested to permit entry of Jews
who reach their frontiers from
Hungary-
“The Governments of the Uni-
ted Kingdom and the United
States emphasize that in accept-
ing the offer which has been
made they do not in any way
condone the action of the Hun-
garian Government in forcing
emigration of Jews as an alter-
native to persecution and death.”
Jewish Guerrillas Battle Under
Blue-White Flag In Warsaw Streets
By Hyman Roth, J. P. S. Overseas Staff
Geneva (JPS)—The rapidly diminishing forces of Warsaw’s un-
derground now battling openly in the city’s streets against German
troops, include in their ranks Jewish units fighting under the blue
and white, the Jewish flag, according to a communique received
here from Warsaw’s battlers. The communique singles out for spec-
ial mention the unit called Berek Yoselevitch, named for a Jew who
led the Jewish force in the war for Poland’s independence in 1863.
The Berek Yoselevitch unit is commanded by Aaron Kaplan, the
report states, and has caused
many German casualties.

UNRRA ACTS TO PRECLUDE
REPATRIATION FAVORITISM
Washington (JPS)—To guard a-
gainst favoritism and arbitrary
discrimination in the repatria-
tion of Europe’s populations in
the event of a sudden German
collapse, the United Nations Re-
lief and Rehabilitation Adminis-
tration has drawn up plans for
the multilateral handling of the
repatriation problem, rather than
leave it on the every nation for
itself and every person for him-
self basis. Among other reasons
for multilateral action listed by
Thomas Cooley, deputy director
of the UNRRA’S displaced per-
sons division, are:
The necessity for some of the
returning persons to cross sever-
al borders; establishment of pri-
orities in returns, so that skilled
workers will be able to go where
they are most needed but not at
the expense of impeding essential
work projects.

no hatred towards the Jews and
no Hitlers, Nazism and wars to
plague the world. ,
