DENTON DOINGS
September, 1962
MANY WONDERFUL
PEOPLE
We attended the 50th Wedding
Anniversary celebration for the
Fred Connells at First Presby-
terian Church.
We have rarely seen so many
obviously cultured men and wom-
en in one group.
They were married on Sept. 4,
1912, in the home of Mrs. Connell’s
parents in Honey Grove, Tex.
We quote the Kingsville paper:
“In 1925 Mr. and Mrs. Connell
moved to Kingsville at the time
of the opening of the school then
known as South Texas State
Teachers College. He was a mem-
ber of the A&I faculty continu-
ously until his retirement in Au-
gust, 1951, teaching economics and
holding various administrative
positions.
“At the time of his retirement
in November, 1951, he was asked
to assume the duties of manager
of the Kingsville Chamber of Com-
merce, a position he held until
1957.
Throughout their years in Kings-
ville Mr. and Mrs. Connell were
active members of the Presby-
terian Church and participated in
numerous civic affairs. Two years
ago the couple moved to Denton.”
Hosts for the reception were
their children, Mr. and Mrs. F.
N. Wells of Edna, Texas, and Dr.
and Mrs. L. F. Connell, Jr., of
Denton and their six grandchil-
dren.
Both Fred, Sr. and Fred, Jr.
are members of the Denton Rotary
Club.

JOAN BAUER COFFEY
Joan is Mrs. Jesse Coffey (Den-
ton County Bank). She was a
teacher at Victoria (there since
1936). “Out of school in 1951, I
taught seven and a half years,
married Jess in 1958. We have
three boys: Allen, 3, David, 2,
and Stephen, seven months.”
Joan is a vivacious brunette and
very friendly, to the right people.
She was afraid when they came
to Denton that she would be a long
time making friends. She says she
was wrong; she has a lot of
friends now and is making more
every day. We visited with the
Coffeys at the Kiwanis picnic at
McKenna Park.

James H. Gardenhire
NEW PRESIDENT OF METHODIST MEN
James H. Gardenhire was elected president of
Methodist Men at the picnic held at Price Camp
Wednesday, August 15. More than 125 persons were
present for a lovely evening of fellowship. The
steel building is finished and covers the concrete
slab put down recently. It is an ideal place for an
outing for any class or group.
Other officers named for the Methodist Men
were Johnny Guyer, vice-president and program
chairman and Jack Kline, treasurer.
Jim Gardenhire is one of the most popular men in Den-
ton. He furnishes a lot of life in the Kiwanis Club, the
Men’s Garden Club, and in the official board at First
Methodist Church.
He has been an agronomist at the Experiment Station
for the last thirteen years, and has many friends in Den-
ton.
His wife, Lavoris, is a Rockwall girl he met in NTSU.
Jim is a graduate of Oklahoma State.
