Mrs. Scott Discusses
Campaign Issues
In my opinion it would be well
for your supporters of Shivers
AND Yarborough to consider the
following d» liberate 1> and can-
fully duung the coming week:
At the risk of political suicide
(and you are judgt and jury)
Shiran put h tftj t Tgxo
above loyalty to party candidate,
fought for end gained our tide-
lands. for your children and their
children
Shivers is the only governor
in history of Texas who called
a special session of the legisla-
ture in order to raise the pay of
the teachers During his admin-
istration their pay has been in-
creased almost $1200 00 a year.
He did NOT veto the $600 00
raise sought by the teachers
the state comptroller certified
there was not sufficient money
in the treasury to pay the in-
crease sought Thus, jnder the
constitution, which Shivers did
not write, the law became in-
valid.
Acquaint yourself with the
story' of Port Arthur, Texas. If
you lack a contact, I suggest Mrs.
Dan Johnson of that city for fac-
tual data that will astound you.
She is a native of Port Arthur—
not a political import
The land deal, of which so
much has been made, was con-
summated before Shivers even
became Lieutenant Governor —
how many people would turn
their backs on the same sort of
deal if they had the opportunity-
We do want free enterprise,
don't we’
Opposition to Shivers ha-= an-
nounced, <n the Wichita Times,
he favors segregation, yet a great
many colored people are led to
believe he will abolish segrega-
tion once in office.
Opposition now states Shivers
has always been in favo- of and
wanted s sales tax. If this is
true, since Shivers has been in
office five years, why don't vre
have the sales tax?
During the next week uli Tex-
ans should seek and sift out the
truth about pertinent issues in
this campaign The truth of the
Shivers administration is a mat-
ter of record in Austin for any-
one interested. Let us conscious-
ly fight against losing our way
in a mare of petty propaganda
which is not handicapped by the
truth or pertinent to local or na-
tional welfare
How. or for whom we choose
to vote is strictly a personal mat-
ter, but it behooves us all to
weigh carefully the issues in-
volved—to do our own thinking
and checking on issues—to select
the man we feel is best qualified
to lead our great state which
"ha* the global reputation of being
the “Biggest and the Best ” You
have built that reputation and
onlv vou can maintain it!
