RALEIGH, N. C. — With a thin
sprinkling of delegates here from
the 14 southern and border states,
with the exception of Louisiana, at
the recent southern regional Demo-
cratic conference, an old saying
common to the prohibition era and
which is true even today in some
southern states came to mind:
“They vote dry and drink wet.
And so, applying this sentiment
to the southern regional conference.
Democrats in the South generally
will vote for Harry Truman and
drink civil rights. In other words
they are almost unanimous against
the civil rights program, but they’re
still going to vote Democratic. So
there was no disunity here. Fact is,
civil rights wasn’t mentioned.
Neither was the word “Dixie-
crats” mentioned. But there
were several pointed remarks
directed at the Dixiecrats and
their bolt of the Democratic na-
tional convention at Philadel-
phia. For instance, Gov. Sidney
McMath, of Arkansas, in com-
plimenting the frank discussion
of civil rights and other contro-
versial subjects by the Young
Democratic convention at Chat-
tanooga, said:
“But when the vote was cast,

Empire Has Been Lost
rrlNG GEORGE VI of England is
Ei. reported in the invalid class,
following an operation of some
weeks ago. He is said not to be
in a serious condition, but should
anything happen and the Princess
Elizabeth be called to the throne,
she would be crowned as a queen
only, not as an empress, as was
her great grandmother, Victoria.
There is no longer a British em-
pire, and she will not be empress
of India. Without that now defunct
title all she will inherit is five
queenly crowns, those of England,
Australia, Canada, South Africa
and New Zealand. With that of
England goes the reign over Eng-
land’s colonies.
In reality Elizabeth, as queen,
will reign, but not rule, in England
or in any of the English common-
wealth of nations, though in each
of which she will be queen, the
reigning monarch, the symbol, to
which the people owe allegiance.
It was in the fall of 1918 that
King George V, the father of
the present monarch, explained

As we get older, stress and strain, over-
exertion, excessive smoking or exposure to
cold sometimes slows down kidney func-
tion. This may lead many folks to com-
plain of nagging backache, loss of pep and
energy, headaches and dizziness. Getting
up nights or frequent passages may result
from minor bladder irritations due to cold,
dampness or dietary indiscretions.
If your discomforts are due to these
causes, don’t wait, try Doan’s Pills, a mild
diuretic. Used successfully by millions for
over 60 years. While these symptoms may
often otherwise occur, it’s amazing how
many times Doan’s give happy relief—

With agriculture as the main
source of income in most of the
southern states, highlight of the
conference was an address by Sec-
retary of Agriculture Charles Bran-
nan. And the concensus of opinion
among the press corps, which by
the way, slightly outnumbered dele-
gates, was that if any one thinks
the Brannan plan is a dead duck,
they’re wrong.
For instance, Gov. Kerr Scott of

Scholars in most churches today
are pretty well agreed that what
we have in the New Testament is
not a rigid pattern of organization,
but rather certain principles on
which any successful church must
be built. Let us see what some of
these are.

Old Plaster Walls Falling Badly
QUESTION: I live in an old
brick house, over fifty years old.
Recently, the inside wall of the
exposed side of the kitchen has
cracked in any number of places
—not the ordinary cracking of
plaster, but gaping cracks allow-
ing sand to pour out. In places so
much sand has come out that
holes are enlarging. The wall on
the outside has been pointed up,
painted with asbestos paint and
house paint; the inside wall has
many times been scraped, shel-
himself a farmer,
and for many years director of the
state agricultural commission, pre-
dicted that the Brannan plan would
gain “more and more support,’’
and declared he would like to see it
given a fair trial.
He declared it would eliminate
the question of surpluses by throw-
ing all these products onto the open
market which would permit con-
sumers to buy cheaper farm pro-
ducts than under any of the other
farm programs.
Examples Given
Secretary Brannan, in pumping
for his own program, gave a very
simple and arithmetical example
of how the tremendous egg surplus
could be eliminated if the people
could afford to buy eggs at reason-
able prices. Any one with paper

pounds of dried eggs stored in a
Kansas cave. It takes three pounds
of shell eggs to make a pound of
dried eggs.
So 68 million pounds times 3
dozen, times 12 eggs, equals
above 2.5 billion eggs, divided
by 150 million people equals 16.3
eggs per capita, or as Secre-
tary Brannan said, “if the per
capita consumption of eggs was
increased six eggs per year it
would wipe out all the surplus
in eggs.”
But with retail price of eggs at
60 to 75 cents a dozen consumption
is going down instead of up.
The government, by the way,
paid 32 to 40 cents a dozen for
those dried eggs, or 96 to $1.20 a
pound.
Potato Surplus
Following on the heels of the
Raieigh conference comes the an-
nouncement that the government
has 50 million bushels of potatoes
to dispose of in spite of the fact
that acreage was curtailed some
20 per cent. But when farmers will
increase fertilizer and plant rows
closer together to overcome the ac-
reage reduction, they raise just as
many potatoes, thus upping the sur-
plus.
And despite the fact that southern
farmers voted 10 to i for cotton
acreage reduction and state and
county committees had complete
charge of ailoting the acreage re-
ductions, some few large cotton op-
erators and disgruntled smaller
ones raised such a howl the house

■j^rOT ALL CHRISTIANS are qual-
ified to hold office in the
church, and very few, if any,
would be equally good in any office.
A Sunday school superintendent,
for example, might make a poor
showing at a prayer-meeting talk.
A man who can conduct a success-
ful financial campaign and keep
the church up to a high level of
generosity the year round, may not
be just the man to plan the educa-

the Indian empire, and to meet
obligations for arms the war
had brought to England. He
chose socialism for England
as more desirable than holding

have no voice in the making of
that choice. Attlee had done
what Churchill had refused to

One of the final chapters of that
sad story of the loss of an empire
was written at the recent confer-
ence of the English commonwealth
of nations held at Colombo, Ceylon.
It was a gathering of the prime
ministers of five independent na-
