other “homegrown” items.
The City of Albany

Ramon. In addition, the
Farmers Market will be

X-ray training scheduled
♦ Directors get
clinic update
at brief meeting
By Melinda L. Lucas
A clinic update and
tuition reimbursement op-
tions for EMT candidates
were discussed by mem-
bers of the Shackelford
County Hospital District’s
board of directors during a
brief half hour meeting on
Monday, July 19.
In business manager
Leslie Belcher’s absence,
EMS supervisor Steven
Hobbs reported that opera-
tions at the local health
clinic are going smoothly
since July 1, when the
district took control of the
facility.
New patients are being
accepted, said Belcher this
week, and all paperwork
has been submitted for
Medicare and Blue Cross
approval.
“We’re expecting the
Blue Cross numbers any
day now and our Medicare
number should be assigned
within 30 days,” she con-
tinued. “Once the Medicare
is in place, the Medicaid
will follow pretty quickly.”
Belcher added that this
month’s billing is already
in the computer “ready to
print” once the numbers
have been received.
Clinic Training
Belcher also said that
the clinic would not be see-
ing patients for a couple of
days this week and next in
order for members of the
medical staff to receive
training on the x-ray ma-
chine.
The office will be open
and calls will be taken,
' she explained, but nurse
practitioner Travis Wil-
burn and the nurses will
not be able to see patients
on Wednesday and Thurs-
day, July 28-29, and again
on Thursday and Friday,
August 5-6.
“After that, they will be
able to perform x-rays any
time during office hours,”
Belcher explained. “Be-
fore, Dr. Ford had to do it
when he was in the office,
but now, we’ll have three
people trained to take
x-rays.”
EMT Tuition
Hobbs asked the board
during last week’s meet-
ing if the district could
reimburse local residents
for EMT training for those
who meet the qualifica-
tions for and are interested
in being certified.
The board instructed
Hobbs to send the reim-
bursement contract used
by the district in the past to
attorney Don Anderson for
review so that a new docu-
ment could be developed.
Garage sale date set Sept. 11
The Albany Chamber pf
Commerce will sponsor the
annual Community-Wide
Garage Sale on Saturday,
September 11, and local
residents are encouraged
to start planning for the
event, whether as partici-
pants or shoppers.
“We hope that everyone
will mark their calendar
and participate,” said
Chamber president Diana
Nail.
The popular affair will
feature all-day garage
sale bargains set out by
downtown merchants and
by citizens all over town,
beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Maps of all sale loca-
tions will be available from
the Chamber, possibly the
day before the event.
Participants will have
the use of numbered signs
for their yards. There will
be a fee of $15 to partici-
pate in the sale, including
a refundable $10 deposit
for the yard sign, according
to Nail.
For more information
or to register as a garage
sale site, call the Chamber
office at 762-2525.
Blood drive slated next week
The Meek Blood Cen-
ter bloodmobile will be at
First Baptist Church on
Thursday, August 5, from
noon until 6:00 p.m. The
Kiwanis Club sponsors the
blood drives in Albany. All
blood types are urgently
needed at this time due
to a significant decrease
in blood donations since
June.
“The summer months
are always challenging,”
said Frances Baker, donor
recruiter. “People get busy
and they just forget to give
blood, but the need is al-
ways there. Blood donation
is a very rewarding act of
service to others. Without
blood donors, many lives
would be lost needlessly.
One hour of time spent
giving blood can give
someone else a lifetime,
and it doesn’t get muth
better than that,” Baker
continued.
Donors must be at least
17 years old (age 16 with
signed parental consent),
weigh a minimum of 120
pounds and in general good
health. All donors must
present a photo ID. Those
who have eligibility ques-
tions may call Meek Blood
Center at 325-670-2798 or
visit the website at www.
meekbloodcenter.org.
City pool to dose after Aug. 13
The Albany City Pool
will close for the 2010 sea-
son on Friday, August 13,
according to pool manager
Zan Edwards.
“I know that this is ear-
lier than usual, but with
student lifeguards starting
two-a-days for football and
volleyball, it’s just too dif-
ficult to schedule workers,”
Edwards said.
Tentatively, the pool
should be open every day
as usual through Friday,
August 13.
The facility will con-
tinue to be available to rent
in the evenings for parties
until that date, as well.
For more information
about renting the pool, call
City Hall at 762-3133.
