11:00—Grand Ole Opry
(Continued From Page One)
Regardless of the farm program
in operation at the time, he says
farmers have generally had a pret-
ty good year if they’ve had rain.
Harrell says the one thing which
would help the farmer in this area
most outside of rainfall is finding
a market for cotton.
As to the GOP’s proposed flex-
ible price supports, Harrell says,
"I don't think the flexible will
work, because I don’t think there
is anything else flexible.”
He feels that farmers generally
are more conscious of the need
for soil conservation. He says there
are some 950 soil conservation dis-
trict cooperators, but that some of
the approximately 25 per cent out-
side the district are doing a better
job than some of the cooperators.
Harrell says that in his own case,
inability to rotate the cotton crop,
because of the limits on the land
he can irrigate, has affected his
own conservation program. He
does grow some alfalfa and has
terraces on dry land, however.
Born in Runnels County near
Bronte on Dec. 24. 1909, Harrell
was one of ten children of his par-
ents, who were farmers.
The family moved to Austin
when he was four years old and
he attended school in South Austin
for some two and a half years
while his father worked in the con-
struction business. After this, the
family again moved to a farm near
Austin and he attended a rural
school until 1924, when the family
moved to Littlefield.
The family settled on a farm 12
miles west of Littlefield. There
were no paved roads to speak of
west of Fort Worth, Harrell re-
members. Littlefield had a popula-
tion of about 2,000.
The family came by train and
the livestock were unloaded at the
station and driven the 12 miles to
the farm. The furniture was hauled
with a wagon and team.
As a student in Littlefield High
School, Harrell played football a-
gainst Levelland in 1928. He re-
members that the Lobos won the
game, 7-0, before a crowd of a-
bout 16 or 20 people.
The game was played in the cold
and snow on an open lot east of
the Levelland compress.
After graduation in 1929 Harrell
married Charlie Grace Bagwell,
whom he knew at Littlefield High
School. Her parents were Lamb
County farmers.
Harrell farmed for a year, then
went to Borger in the oil field to
wqrk for a pipeline firm shortly
after martial law had been in ef-
fect there.
He moved to Hockley County for
the first time in 1991, renting land
eight miles north of town. He
bolight 177 acres four miles north
of the city in 1944, the farm on
which he lives at the present time.
Farming J. V. Morton’s place for
five years, Harrell got his first ir-

won $900 in cash for Aubrey Baas of Lubbock for the only correct
solution in more than 140,000 Kashword Puzzles submitted to the
levelland Daily Sun News over a period of 35 weeks. Above is the
cashier’s check with which Bass was paid. Bass turned the money
over to ids 15-year-old nephew, Doug Davis, !10 14th Street. Young
Doug once came within a. single Utter of winning the puzzle, but
turned out to be the winner, after all. A new puzzle, worth $200 in-
cluding bonuses, starts in today’s Levelland Daily Sun News.
Monterey.Plainsmen Down
Lobos in Cage Clash, 75-51
LUBBOCK, (Spl) — Monterey’s
Plainsmen won undisputed owner-
ship of second place in the hot Dis-
trict 1-AAA basketball race with a
75-51 trouncing of Levelland Fri-
day night while first place Palo
Duro trampled Sweetwater’s Mus-
tangs, 62-45.
The contests gave Monterey a
4-1 record and Palo Duro, still un-
defeated, a 5-0 mark, while the
Lobos hold a 5-3 record.
Monterey was to battle Snyder
Palo Duro was to play Plainview
and Sweetwater was to face La-
mesa in conference games Satur-
day night.
The Lobos, resting from the con-
ference scramble were to take on
Sudan there.
In the Friday night contest, Mon-
terey and Levelland played before
a packed crowd in Monterey’s new
gymnasium.
The Plainsmen jumped to an ear-
ly lead and maintained it through-
out the game, although Coach Gano
Tubb’s crew employed a full-court
press much of the time.
Carroll Stephens, James Wiley
and Preston Davis led the Plains-
men with 21, 17 and 17 points re-
spectively.
Levelland’s Larry Corbin scorch-
ed the hoop with 24 points to lead
for both teams, but it failed to
suffice as the taller Monterey boys
won time and time again at the
backboard.
Others scoring for Levelland were
Chester Jackson, 9, Hillry Ranson
2, Jesse Sudderth 2, Bill Billing-
sley 4, LaWayne Rawls 6, Thomas
Cowan 1, Jimmy Johnson 2 and
Huey Bartlett 1.
Monterey jumped to a 24 - 14
first quarter lead and had pushed
ahead 42-30 at halftime. The Plains
men scored 19 points in the third
quarter while Levelland pushed
through 10 to give them a 61 to
40 edge.
Levelland held the Plainsmen to
14 and scored 11 in the final stan-
za.

rigation experience there. He put
down his first well on his own land I
in 1949.
At present, he is farming 315 j

is under irrigation.

Harrell feels that 1950 and 1951'
were the best years area farmers j
have ever had as far as prices
were concerned. Farm prices start-
ed declining in 1952, however and
the county has also been short of j
rain, compounding the problem,
since the expense of pumping wat-
er has been heavy.
Harrell's three children are Ray- j
mond, 24, expected to graduate
from the- Texas dental school at
Houston in June; Joella Sue, 21,
a Tech graduate who is now teach-1
ing school at Andrews, and Charles
9, who is going to school here at
the present time.
