NEW YORK (#1—Some things «
columnist might never know if he
ditin’t read his mall;
That a nonfattening Ice cream
cone hns been patented.
That during the Middle Ages the
tears of a male deer were highly
valued as a medicine. Deer were
available for tent-but how did
they make them cry?
That automatic vending ma-
chines are now on the market
which will serve a complete meal
from soup to nuts.
That 10 million separate calcu-
lations are required to make an
accurate nationwide weather fore-
cast for 24 hours. . v
That the Irish and British suf-
fer more dental decay than the
Italians, but an Italian is more
likely to develop Pyorrhea.
Thar if all the fluorescent lamps
made in America In the last 18
years were wired together they
would tomi a continuous chain
of light that would encircle the
earth seven times and extend to
the moon and back. This seems
like a marvelous idea. Why hasn’t
it been done?
That in one out of twenty Amer-
ican families which paint their
own homes the job is done entirely
by the wife—and she uses 25 per
cent more paint than . is really
necessary.
That in Nepal, where women are
considered inferior, a wife’s meal
often consists only of the scraps
her husband leaves on his plate
That in Sweden, which has the
highest percentage Of car owner-
ship in Europe, every 11th person

We have been trying to have
something a little extra In our
column which is used both for the
Sunday issue of the Sun Newa and
the weekly Herald. This week we
thought it might be newa to some
of our readers that we have a
multi-millionaire farmer in my
native Arkansas.
Winthrop Rockefeller, the farm-
er of whom we apeak, had some
marital trouble a few years i*<o
and came to Arkansas to finish
the final divorce proceedings.
Rockefeller heard about Arkan-
sas from a native of the state
with whom he served during Word
War II. The multi-millionaire vis-
ited the state, liked it immediate-
ly and after his separation from
his .wife, Bobo, decided to make
Arkansas his home.
Farming and raising cattle are
the new interests of this young
man who gave up a life of lux-
ury in the East to become a mpn
of the soil in Arkansas. This oil
heir with the world - famous sur-
name settled in the Ozarks about
60 miles from our home town, Van
Buren, at Morrelfon and has be-
come one of the most talked a-
bout men in the state. His gifts,
popularity and farming ideas have
brought him to the forefront a-
mong progressive farmers, some
even suggesting that he run for
governor, but up to now his great-
est ambition is. to be top stock-
man of the state and pass his
knowledge on to other farmers.
This is not his only bigness. As
a man he is over six feet tall,
weighs 240 pounds. He is not a roll
top desk farmer, either. He spends
most of his time on his farm, Win-
rock, 1,000 acres which is atop of
the nearby mountain and 500 ac-
res on the Arkansas River in the
same vicinity.
Since coming to Arkansas, Rock-
efeller has donated an estimated
■5500,000 to various causes in Ark-
ansas. He is chairman of a newly
created state industrial develop-
ment commission which has as its
uipose inducing industry to the
state. His grandfather was known
is the ’’Oil King". Who knows,
perhaps tne grandson will one day
ie crowned king of Arkansas far
ners.
